The Porta Portese Est Market, which Romans simply call Porta Portese 2, is one of the major Sunday events in the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region. It takes place every Sunday morning along Viale Palmiro Togliatti, in the stretch facing Piazza Pino Pascali, in an area straddling the Centocelle and Alessandrino neighborhoods in the eastern part of the capital.

Created as an alternative to the historic and overcrowded Trastevere market, Porta Portese 2 has built a loyal following over the years, consisting mainly of Romans looking for a bargain. Many residents of the eastern district prefer it to the original: prices tend to be lower, and it lacks the throngs of tourists that characterize the city-center market.

With about five hundred exhibitors, the selection is vast, ranging from second-hand goods to antiques. Strolling through the stalls, you will encounter:

For many families in the district, going to Porta Portese Est is a small weekly ritual. You arrive early, while the stalls are still being set up and the best deals are still waiting to be found, and you stroll leisurely until well past noon. The atmosphere is the genuine, popular spirit of Roman markets, far from the shop windows of the center: the voices of the vendors, the haggling, and the infinite variety of goods displayed on the ground and on the stalls.
