The Christmas light visible from Rome

If there is one image that defines Christmas in the Castelli Romani, it is the Comet Star of Rocca di Papa: a giant luminous structure mounted on the summit of the Medieval Fortress, which glows over the town during December nights, visible from much of the Roman plain and the southern districts of the capital. For about thirty years, its lighting has signaled the official start of the holidays for the locals, and over time, it has become a major draw for visitors from across the province of Rome.

A grassroots tradition

The Star was not born from an institutional project but from the initiative of the town's youth: since the 1980s, a local committee began building a comet to be placed on the site of the papal fortress using large iron scaffolding and hundreds of lightbulbs. The installation has progressively grown and modernized, reaching its current size of over three hundred square meters, now illuminated by thousands of LED lights. It is a prime example of how a recent popular tradition has become deeply woven into the landscape and identity of this Lazio town.

The markets in Piazza della Repubblica

The commercial and social heart of the event is Piazza della Repubblica, where Christmas markets and food and wine stalls are set up. The stalls offer gift ideas, handcrafted items, decorations, and typical products from the Castelli Romani, while food vendors provide seasonal specialties throughout the day.

The historic center and nativity scenes

Beyond the main square, the event extends into the alleys of the historic center, one of the most characteristic villages in the Alban Hills: light displays, scattered nativity scenes, and small exhibitions accompany visitors on their walk toward the viewpoints overlooking the Star. Rocca di Papa's location, at over 700 meters above sea level, offers a view that stretches from Lake Albano to Rome on clear days.

The torch from Saint Peter's

One of the most defining moments is the torch relay: on the morning of December 8th, a group of athletes sets off from Saint Peter's Square in Rome, running the approximately thirty kilometers that separate the Vatican from the village, carrying the blessed torch to Piazza della Repubblica. The runners' arrival is followed by the lighting of the Star on the Fortress, awaited and applauded by the crowd gathered in the square.

For families and children

The afternoon of the Immaculate Conception is designed especially for children, with rides, magic shows, face painting, puppet theaters, and Santa's House set up in the center. On subsequent weekends, entertainment continues alongside the markets, making the event a perfect destination for a day trip from Rome.

Organizers

The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Rocca di Papa in collaboration with the Pro Loco and local associations, which manage the decorations, stalls, and entertainment. It follows the common Lazio model of a festival built by local volunteers around a shared symbol.

When to go

The peak days are traditionally centered on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and the weekend preceding Christmas, when the markets remain open for several consecutive days. However, once lit, the Star remains visible throughout the holiday period: those arriving later can still admire it from the square or the scenic roads leading up to Monte Cavo.
