Salerno's Christmas City: artisan stalls in Piazza Sant'Agostino, under the Luci d'Artista lights
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
MeraviglioSA - The Christmas City is a festive market that, for three editions now, has taken over Piazza Sant'Agostino in the historic center of Salerno, located just behind the Provincial Palace and a short walk from Via Mercanti and the Cathedral of San Matteo. This is no ordinary fair: the event was created as a showcase for local craftsmanship from Salerno and its province, featuring selected exhibitors who present their work in charming wooden huts adorned with garlands and colorful ribbons.
The event is a key part of Salerno's grand Christmas season, centered around the Luci d'Artista, an event that has illuminated the city with dozens of light installations since 2006, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Campania region every year. MeraviglioSA serves as its commercial and cultural complement: a format designed to create a dialogue between the light displays and local workshops, the squares and traditional crafts.
The stalls host a curated selection of local goods, far removed from mass-produced Christmas trinkets. Visitors will find, in particular:
In the most recent edition, the layout was redesigned to echo the light installation hovering above the square, with brightly colored stalls inspired by the giant pencils of the Luci d'Artistaโa detail that made Piazza Sant'Agostino one of the most photographed corners of Christmas in Salerno.
MeraviglioSA is designed with families in mind. On weekends, Santa Claus meets the little ones for souvenir photos and to collect their letters, which can be dropped into the red mailbox set up in the square. During the week, artisan workshops are open to both children and adults, featuring leatherworking, ceramics, jewelry making, honey demonstrations, and creative recycling activities led by local associations. There is no shortage of entertainment, traditional games, and evening festivities.
The project is promoted by the CNA (National Confederation of Crafts) of Salerno, with the support of the Salerno Chamber of Commerce and the Municipality of Salerno; artistic entertainment is managed by the Bottega San Lazzaro association. The promoters' stated goal is to promote local craftsmanship, offering micro-enterprises a showcase during the time of year when the city records its highest influx of tourists.
Visiting MeraviglioSA means combining Christmas shopping with a stroll through the ancient center of Salerno, among its medieval alleys, the Giardino della Minerva, and the Trieste seafront. The square is within walking distance of all the main light installations, making a visit to the market a natural stop on the Luci d'Artista route. It is also an excellent base for discovering the province: the Amalfi Coast, Paestum, and the Cilento region are just a short distance away, and during the Christmas season, many local accommodations are fully booked on weekends.
The event traditionally opens in early December and continues until January 6th, the day of Epiphany. The most evocative moments are in the late afternoon and evening, when the city's lights are on and the square fills with visitors; those who prefer a quieter visit with children can choose weekday mornings instead.
As of the publication date of this page, the organizers have not yet released the calendar for the new edition of the MeraviglioSA Christmas Markets in Salerno. The event, promoted by the CNA with the Municipality of Salerno and the Chamber of Commerce, has so far taken place in Piazza Sant'Agostino during the Luci d'Artista period, from the first days of December until January 6th.
For the 2026/2027 season, the executive project for the city's light displays was approved in April 2026, and in May, the Salerno Chamber of Commerce allocated additional resources to the event; however, the municipal administration has specified that the final dates will be announced between September and October 2026. Until then, the period, hours, and program of the markets remain to be confirmed: it is advisable to check the official channels of the CNA of Salerno and the Municipality before planning your trip to Campania.
Piazza Sant'Agostino, historic center of Salerno (84121), behind the Provincial Palace, a few minutes' walk from Via Mercanti and the Cathedral.
Access to the market area is free of charge; visiting the Luci d'Artista light installations throughout the city is also free. The stalls are open every day, with continuous hours from morning until late evening.
The historic center is very crowded on December weekends: it is best to arrive early, wear comfortable shoes, and book hotels and restaurants well in advance, as demand is high throughout the province.
