Italy's narrowest Carnival, winding through the alleys of an Iblean village
The Melilli Carnival, nestled in the heart of the Iblean Mountains in the province of Syracuse, is one of the oldest and most iconic folk festivals in southeastern Sicily. Its fame stems from a unique local challenge: the winding, narrow streets of the historic center force master float-builders to construct "mignon" allegorical floats, measuring at most 2 to 2.40 meters wide, capable of passing with millimeter precision through alleys, under balconies, and around impossible corners. Once they reach the wider squares, these floats open up and transform, offering the public a surprising spectacle, much like giant pop-up books. This is why Melilli is known as the home of the "narrowest Carnival in Italy."
The event has been inscribed in the Registry of Intangible Heritage of Sicily as a traditional festival of great cultural value and is now part of the identity heritage of the Municipality of Melilli. The organization is managed by the Fondazione Museo Pino Valenti da Melilli, which preserves the memory of the master float-builders and passes down the art of papier-mâché from generation to generation.
For about a week, the village comes alive with parades of allegorical floats, costumed groups, school carnivals, live concerts, and DJ sets that energize the nights in the squares. Alongside traditional events, each edition brings national guests and famous godmothers to Melilli, turning the festival into a highly anticipated event far beyond the borders of the province of Syracuse.
The Carnival does not take place only in the historic center of Melilli: the parades and entertainment also involve the hamlets of Villasmundo and Città Giardino, with events dedicated to schools and children. During the festival days, visitors can also discover the town's cultural heritage, from the MU.S.A. (Museum of Natural History and Archaeology) to the Cava del Barocco, and the Vintage Motorcycle Museum.
The 66th edition of the Melilli Carnival took place from February 12 to 17, 2026, confirming the Iblean village as the home of Italy's narrowest Carnival. Highlights of the edition included Eiffel 65, the Tropicana Best Band, a square disco hosted by FM Italia, and the grand finale godmother, dancer Francesca Tocca.
The allegorical floats navigated the alleys of the historic center before opening up in the squares, while costumed groups, school carnivals, and musical shows brought life to both Melilli and the hamlet of Villasmundo. Admission to all events was free.
