The summer carnival of Ferla, in the heart of the Iblean Mountains

Cardacia – August Carnival is one of the most beloved events of the summer in Ferla, a Baroque village in the Iblean Mountains in the province of Syracuse, in the heart of Sicily. While the rest of Italy celebrates Carnival in winter, here the masks return in the height of summer: on a warm August evening, the streets of the historic center fill with costumed groups, music, and color, creating an atmosphere of contagious joy.
Cardacia is above all about the freedom to have fun without filters. There is no imposed theme, and no need for rented costumes: each group, ranging from ten to fifty people, organizes itself independently, creating a parade born from play, friendship, or simply the desire to participate. It is a celebration of raw, instinctive creativity, where irony and imagination matter more than the perfection of the disguise.
The masked procession kicks off in Piazza Aldo Moro and winds through the historic streets of the village: Via Umberto, Via Garibaldi, and the famous Via Vittorio Emanuele, the so-called "Sacred Way" dotted with Ferla's 18th-century churches, before reaching Piazza Sant'Antonio. Along the route, dancing, improvised choreography, and enthusiastic audience participation accompany the masked groups.
When the parade ends, the party doesn't stop: the Foam Party takes place on Via Vittorio Emanuele, transforming the Baroque street into a large open-air dance floor for all participants. It is the most anticipated moment, especially for the younger crowd, and perfectly captures the carefree spirit of the event.
The setting of Cardacia makes the event even more evocative. Ferla is listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy: rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in an elegant Iblean Baroque style, it is the gateway to the rock necropolis of Pantalica and the Anapo Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Participating in Cardacia is therefore also an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in the Syracuse hinterland, among 17th-century churches, dry-stone walls, and the landscapes of the Iblean Mountains.
Organized by the Municipality of Ferla, Cardacia is a popular, free festival that involves the entire community: residents, groups of friends, families, and visitors from neighboring towns. Participation in the parades is free upon registration of the groups, and the event has now established itself as a hallmark of the Ferla summer.
The Cardacia – August Carnival will return to Ferla in the summer of 2026, proposing its well-established format: parades of masked groups along the historic streets of the center and the traditional final Foam Party on Via Vittorio Emanuele.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Ferla: the detailed program will be published on the official channels of the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event. It is advisable to check for updates before planning your visit.
