The medieval village in the Caserta area dresses up for autumn to celebrate the PGI Melannurca Campana apple

In the Municipality of Valle di Maddaloni, a small hillside town resting at the foot of the Tifatini Mountains in the province of Caserta, autumn has a distinct color: the streaked red of the PGI Melannurca Campana apple. For over thirty years, the Melannurca Apple Festival has celebrated this fruit and the rural culture surrounding it, drawing visitors to Campania from across the province and far beyond. The event typically takes place over two weekends in October, giving guests plenty of time to taste, explore, and truly get to know the area.
The heart of the festival is the historic center: narrow alleys, stairways, courtyards, and small squares that fill with stalls, lights, and aromas for the occasion. Piazza Annunziata and Corso Umberto I serve as a natural stage for performances, while side streets host exhibition stands featuring local artisans and producers. It is a setup that doesn't hide the town but puts it on display; those who stroll through discover ancient portals and vistas that remain the exclusive preserve of residents for the rest of the year.
The food and wine stalls showcase the Annurca in every possible form, alongside classic Caserta cuisine. Common offerings include:
There is also a pastry competition, which in recent years has pitted professional cake designers against amateur enthusiasts in creating works entirely dedicated to the Annurca.
The live program is one of the reasons the festival is so beloved: Neapolitan posteggia, international folk groups, tammurriate, and traditional Southern music alternate with street performers, dance shows, and performances by local primary school children. Alongside the entertainment, there are conferences on local agriculture, photography exhibitions dedicated to apple cultivation, and book presentations about the region.
The Apple Festival is also an opportunity for slow tourism. The melai — traditional straw beds where apples finish ripening after harvest — can be visited via guided tours that explain a cultivation method unique to Italy. Just a few minutes from the center lie the Ponti della Valle, the spectacular arches of the Carolino Aqueduct designed by Luigi Vanvitelli for the Royal Palace of Caserta and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997: 529 meters long and nearly 56 meters high, featuring three tiers of tuff arches.
In March 2024, at the Senate of the Republic, the Pro Loco «Valle» received the «Festival of Excellence» Quality Mark, a recognition rewarding organizational professionalism and the protection of local gastronomic traditions. This result belongs to the entire community: the festival is built every year by volunteers, with the patronage of the Municipality of Valle di Maddaloni, the Campania Region, the Province of Caserta, and the Royal Palace of Caserta.
This is not a festival manufactured for passing tourists: it is the celebration of a town that lives by this apple and tells its story with pride. Visitors find popular prices, free admission, locals happy to explain how the Annurca is grown, and a village that remains illuminated late into those October evenings. An ideal destination for a day trip from Caserta, Naples, or Benevento.
The official calendar for the next Melannurca Apple Festival in Valle di Maddaloni has not yet been published. The Pro Loco «Valle» typically releases dates and programs between late summer and early October via its website and social media channels, in coordination with the Municipality and local Caserta press.
What can be said with reasonable certainty is the time frame: for over thirty years, the event has been held in October, when the PGI Melannurca Campana apple completes its ripening on the straw beds, and in recent years it has spanned two consecutive weekends in the town's historic center.
The established format includes food and wine stalls dedicated to the apple and Caserta cuisine, craft exhibitions, Southern folk music and Neapolitan posteggia performances, street artists, photography exhibitions, and guided tours of the apple orchards and the Ponti della Valle of the Carolino Aqueduct, a UNESCO heritage site. Admission is traditionally free.
For exact dates, it is best to follow the Pro Loco «Valle» website (www.prolocovalle.com), its Facebook page, and the events section of the Valle di Maddaloni Municipality website, in the province of Caserta, Campania Region.
By car: Take the Caserta Sud exit on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, then follow the SS7 Appia and Variante Sannitica towards Valle di Maddaloni; the town is about ten kilometers from Caserta. During the festival, the historic center is closed to traffic: park in the designated areas on the outskirts of town and proceed on foot.
By train: Maddaloni or Caserta station on the regional network, then bus or taxi for the final stretch.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport, approximately 40 km away.
Admission to the event is free and open to all. You only pay for what you consume at the stalls, with typical village festival prices. Tastings and packaged products are purchased directly from the producers.
