Two evenings of meatballs and "Little Talents" in the hamlet of Migliano di Lauro
The Meatball Festival is the gastronomic event that brings Migliano to life every June, one of the four hamlets in the municipality of Lauro, in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Campania. The hamlet's square transforms for two evenings into a large open-air dining room: it starts around 8:00 PM, when the stalls open and the scent of tomato sauce spreads through the village houses. It is a village festival in the most authentic sense of the term, born from the desire to bring residents together and introduce visitors to the home cooking of the Vallo di Lauro.
At the center of the menu is the meatball, offered in the two versions that compete for dominance in Campanian kitchens: in sauce, slowly cooked in tomato until it becomes incredibly tender, and fried, crispy on the outside and still steaming. Alongside the meatballs, the stalls serve sandwiches, portions of fries, and, to finish, crêpes. In previous editions, the menu has been enriched with local traditional dishes such as sandwiches with sausage and friarielli (broccoli rabe) and spaghetti with hazelnuts, a pairing that perfectly reflects the agricultural vocation of this part of Irpinia, where the hazelnut is a historic crop.
The festival does not stand alone: it is paired with «Little Talents», the showcase dedicated to the territory's youngest artists. On the stage set up in the square, singing, dancing, and acting performances alternate: the children and teenagers of the Vallo di Lauro bring, as the organizers write, «talent, passion, and emotions» to the audience. This is why the event has such a familiar feel, with parents and grandparents sitting in the audience and the square filling up well beyond the borders of the hamlet.
The Meatball Festival is part of the Lauro Festival program, the summer event series promoted by the Municipality of Lauro which, from June to September, distributes concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions, literary events, and popular festivals between the historic center, Palazzo Pignatelli, the Lancellotti Castle, and the hamlets. Those arriving in Migliano for the meatballs will therefore find a very busy calendar during the same period: the patronal feasts of June, the Music Festival, and, later in the summer, events linked to the castle.
Behind the event is the Cultural and Recreational Association «Valori e Tradizione», which manages both the gastronomic side and the entertainment, with the patronage of the Municipality of Lauro. The festival returned to the square in 2024 after several years of absence and has since established itself as one of the most attended events of the Lauro June, capable of attracting audiences even from the neighboring municipalities of the Vallo and the Agro Nolano area.
Lauro has just over three thousand inhabitants and stands at an altitude of 192 meters in a wooded basin, at the foot of the mountains that separate Irpinia from the Agro Nolano. Its iconic monument is the Lancellotti Castle, burned in 1799 and later rebuilt: the re-enactment of that episode is one of the most anticipated events of the Lauro summer. An evening at the Meatball Festival can therefore easily be combined with a walk through the village and a visit to the castle.
It is advisable to arrive early, around the opening of the stalls, to avoid queues at the cash registers and find a seat at the tables. The evenings take place outdoors: in June, the evening temperatures in the Vallo di Lauro are mild, but a light sweatshirt can come in handy. The atmosphere is that typical of hamlet festivals, informal and suitable for all ages, with a primarily local and family-oriented audience: here, more than elsewhere, the rule applies to sit next to a local and have them tell you what the festival was like in the past.
On June 20 and 21, 2026, the square of the Migliano hamlet, in Lauro, hosted a new edition of the Meatball Festival, organized by the cultural and recreational association «Valori e Tradizione» with the patronage of the Municipality of Lauro. The stalls opened both evenings starting at 8:00 PM with a menu entirely dedicated to the iconic dish of Campanian home cooking.
On the menu were meatballs in sauce and fried meatballs, sandwiches, portions of fries, and crêpes: a simple proposal, designed to be eaten in the square between one performance and another.
The festival served as the setting for the 3rd edition of «Little Talents», the showcase dedicated to the territory's young artists. Music, shows, and entertainment were the ingredients of the two evenings, built to involve families, children, and enthusiasts and to give the little ones a space to express, as the organizers explained, «talent, passion, and emotions in front of the audience».
The closing on Sunday, June 21, was entrusted to the comedian Fofò, a special guest of an evening that combined cabaret, performances by the very young, and tastings. The event was part of the Lauro Festival 2026 program, which from June to September distributes cultural, musical, and popular events throughout the municipal territory.
Beyond these indications, the organizers did not release a detailed schedule of individual performances.
The festival is held in the square of the Migliano hamlet, in Lauro (AV), postal code 83023, in Campania.
Stalls open from 8:00 PM. The sources consulted do not indicate an entrance fee: access to the square is free and dishes are purchased at the stalls.
