About Mater Domini Fair

Every year on the first Sunday of November, the small village of Bagnolo del Salento renews one of its most cherished traditions: the historic Mater Domini Fair. Documented since 1860, the fair takes its name from the small Byzantine-style church located in the heart of the town. Its roots lie in the ancient market for plant fibers and the famous "zzuche"—ropes woven from the reeds of the Alimini Lakes. Today, it brings together a traditional market, autumn flavors, local crafts, and folk music in Piazza San Giorgio, in the Grecìa Salentina area of the province of Lecce.

A historic fair in the heart of Salento

The Mater Domini Fair is one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Bagnolo del Salento, a small village in the hinterland of Otranto, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia. Documented in written records since 1860, the fair is named after the small Church of Mater Domini, a Byzantine-era building in the town center around which this event has been held on the first Sunday of November for over a century and a half.

The "zzuche" and the memory of craftsmanship

The fair originated as a major market dedicated to plant fibers. Bagnolo was once famous for the production of zzuche, sturdy ropes hand-woven from pilieddhi—the marsh reeds that grew along the banks of the Alimini Lakes. The reeds were harvested, beaten with wooden mallets to make them flexible, and then patiently braided into incredibly resistant ropes. This production was one of the area's main economic activities: Bagnolo's fiber works were even awarded at international exhibitions in Vienna and Turin, reaching as far as the English markets. Today, the fair preserves this memory, using demonstrations and workshops to reconnect new generations with a nearly vanished craft.

The market, the flavors, and the music

The event takes place in Piazza San Giorgio and the streets of the historic center. Alongside the market stalls, you will find food stands serving the flavors of the Salento autumn: boiled meats, grilled dishes, and traditional peasant delicacies. The evenings are enlivened by folk music concerts—ranging from pizzica to Italian songs—transforming the fair into a community celebration that attracts visitors from across the Grecìa Salentina.

A heritage to be passed on

For the Municipality of Bagnolo del Salento, the Mater Domini Fair represents an undisputed historical and cultural heritage to be protected and passed on. Organized by the Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco, the event retains the charm of ancient village fairs while renewing itself every year with new entertainment and performances.
