About San Donato Living Nativity

The San Donato di Lecce Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated Christmas events in the Salento region. Organized by the Amici del Presepe A.P.S. Association, it transforms the evocative Serra di San Donato into a modern-day Bethlehem. The Nativity grotto, the traditional 'piscialetta' oven, artisan workshops, and narrow alleys come alive along the paths of the Museum of Popular Traditions. With over 200 performers, the event revives the trades and customs of a bygone rural world in a free evening tour that blends faith, memory, and local identity in the heart of the Province of Lecce.

A Salento-style Bethlehem in the Serra di San Donato

The San Donato di Lecce Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and long-standing Christmas re-enactments in the Salento area and the municipality of San Donato di Lecce, in the Province of Lecce (Puglia). Organized by the Amici del Presepe A.P.S. Association, the event has spanned nearly thirty years, becoming the most awaited Christmas appointment for thousands of visitors who travel to the village every winter to witness the birth of Jesus.

The path along the Serra

The performance unfolds within the natural scenery of the Serra di San Donato, where the charm of the Bethlehem grotto intertwines with the 'piscialetta' oven, artisan workshops, and the alleys and houses climbing along the trails of the Museum of Popular Traditions. Walking through the scenes means immersing yourself in a lost reality, far from daily life, rediscovering the gestures, arts, and flavors of the Salento peasant civilization.

Over 200 performers and ancient crafts

The nativity scene is brought to life by over 200 performers of all ages from the San Donato community. Around the Nativity, the ancient trades and arts of the past take shape: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the baker, the spinner, and women busy with domestic chores. Each workshop tells a fragment of past life, carefully reconstructed with authentic tools, animals, and settings.

  • Nativity grotto set in the Serra
  • Workshops of ancient Salento crafts
  • 'Piscialetta' oven and traditional flavors
  • Tour along the Museum of Popular Traditions
  • Over 200 performers from the local community

A community event

The Living Nativity is part of the Christmas program of the Municipality of San Donato di Lecce and represents much more than a show: it is a collective moment where the entire community gathers around the values of tradition, faith, and hospitality. Admission is free, and the route, being entirely outdoors and held in the evening, invites visitors to experience an authentic Salento Christmas, amidst lights, sounds, and the warmth of the locals.

San Donato Living Nativity — edition 2026

The Amici del Presepe A.P.S. Association is preparing a new edition of the San Donato di Lecce Living Nativity for the 2026 Christmas season. Official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; traditionally, the event is expected to take place between late December and Epiphany, with the usual evening performances in the Serra di San Donato. It is recommended to follow the association's and the municipality's channels for the final calendar.

The San Donato di Lecce Living Nativity will in all likelihood return for the 2026 Christmas season, organized by the Amici del Presepe A.P.S. Association in the municipality of San Donato di Lecce (Province of Lecce, Puglia).

At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made public. The re-enactment of the Nativity in the Serra, featuring the Bethlehem grotto, ancient Salento crafts, and over 200 community performers, is expected to repeat the immersive format along the Museum of Popular Traditions from previous editions. The final schedule will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
