About Marzano Appio Carnival

Every year, on Shrove Tuesday, Marzano Appio celebrates with the Marzano Appio Carnival, a parade organized by the Storia Nostra association. The stars of the show are vintage cars decorated according to a theme, driving through the village accompanied by children and adults in traditional masks. It is a simple, genuine event that blends a passion for historic motors with the charm of a village festival in the Alto Casertano area, in the province of Caserta.

A village festival that breathes tradition

The Marzano Appio Carnival is the event that brings the streets of Marzano Appio to life on Shrove Tuesday. This small town of just over two thousand inhabitants is nestled in the heart of the Alto Casertano area, in the province of Caserta. This is not a monumental carnival with skyscraper-sized floats and weeks of parades; here, the celebration retains the scale and warmth of a community coming together for a single day, which is precisely what makes it so authentic.

The event is organized by the Storia Nostra association, a local group dedicated year-round to preserving local memory and traditions. The carnival is just one of the many events they curate, but it is perhaps the one that most effectively engages all generations, from children in costume to vintage car enthusiasts.

Vintage cars: the true stars

The hallmark of the Marzano Appio Carnival is the parade of themed vintage cars. Each vehicle becomes a small stage on wheels: the crews choose a theme, meticulously prepare their costumes and accessories, and accompany their vehicle along the route, flanked by crowds of spectators. It is a unique take on the carnival mask, extending from the costume to the object, the era, and the style of an entire decade.

Alongside the historic motors, traditional carnival masks are worn by both children and adults, creating a popular counterpoint that restores the day's genuine character as a shared celebration, without stages or tickets.

The 2026 edition

On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Shrove Tuesday, the procession was led by the president of Storia Nostra, Antonella Ciccarelli, and Professor Giovanni Caimano, riding in a Rolls Royce and dressed in 1930s attire complete with original accessories. Following them were an Alfa Romeo Duetto decorated with a "Pope" theme, a yellow Fiat 500 dedicated to "Spring," and a red Beetle themed "Flower Children."

Closing the parade was a "Space"-themed Fiat 500, driven by the parish priest Father Vittorio Marra together with the local youth Catholic association. After the vehicles, the festivities continued with classic carnival masks worn by adults and children throughout the town center.

Storia Nostra: much more than a carnival

To understand the spirit of the event, one must look at the work the association does throughout the year in Marzano Appio: costume re-enactments, historical pageants starting from the village of Terracorpo, historical-cultural walks, the Christmas concert, and the arrival of Santa Claus in Piazza Mercato in December. The group is also a key player in the San Giacomo Fair and the "Mastro Mercato," events that bring the town back to its past every summer.

In this context, the carnival is not an isolated event but a piece of a larger project: keeping the identity of a small community alive in an inland area of Campania that is often far from major tourist circuits.

Marzano Appio: between Roccamonfina and the Terra di Lavoro

The Municipality of Marzano Appio is located at an altitude of approximately 318 meters, about fifty kilometers northwest of Naples and thirty from Caserta, on the edge of the ancient volcanic complex of Roccamonfina. It borders Caianello, Conca della Campania, Presenzano, Roccamonfina, Tora e Piccilli, and Vairano Patenora, in what is historically known as the Terra di Lavoro.

The territory preserves the 16th-century Terracorpo Castle and the Church of the Annunziata, while in autumn, the town is best known for the Primitive Chestnut Festival, which has nearly thirty years of history. The carnival represents the other pillar of local community life, the winter one, which kicks off the local festival calendar.

Why it's worth attending

  • An unusual parade: historic cars decorated with themes, much more than simple floats.
  • A family-friendly carnival: short routes, relaxed pace, and children in masks as the stars.
  • Authenticity: no tourist superstructure, just a community having fun.
  • A reason to explore the Alto Casertano, the Roccamonfina area, and the nearby villages.
