Ferragosto in Caltagirone: faith, processions, and the Illuminated Staircase
Every year, on August 14th and 15th, Caltagirone (Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily) gathers to honor its co-patron, Maria SS. del Ponte, in one of the province's most deeply felt religious observances. The festival coincides with Ferragosto and the Solemnity of the Assumption, drawing devotees, expatriate locals returning for the occasion, and visitors captivated by the fame of the celebrated Illuminated Staircase to the UNESCO-listed historic center.
The devotion stems from an event traditionally dated to August 15, 1572: in the humble Rione del Ponte district, just outside the ancient city walls, the Virgin with the Child is said to have appeared in the water of a spring. A local painter captured her features on canvas, which is now housed in the Sanctuary built the following year. Since then, the Madonna del Ponte has been venerated as the co-patron of Caltagirone and Pilgrim of the Diocese, with the festival renewing the memory of that apparition year after year.
The religious heart of the festival beats on the morning of August 15th: following the evocative Dawn Mass at 5:30 AM, the statue of Maria SS. del Ponte is carried in procession through the main streets of the parish at sunrise, in an atmosphere of intense popular participation. Among the most characteristic rites is the traditional votive offering of the tablecloths and the Quartara, an ancient gesture through which the faithful renew their bond with the Madonna.
The iconic image of the festival is the Santa Maria del Monte Staircase, a monumental flight of 142 majolica-decorated steps rising through the historic center of Caltagirone. On the evenings of August 14th and 15th, at 9:30 PM, the staircase lights up with thousands of hand-colored lanterns (the traditional "coppi"), arranged in a different design each year to form a vast carpet of fire. This is the Luminaria dell'Apparizione, an art form passed down from father to son and linked to families who are custodians of the tradition, recognized in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Sicily (REIS).
The Maria SS. del Ponte Festival combines the spiritual dimension of the Marian solemnity with the scenic power of the illuminated staircase over two days, set in one of the most fascinating ceramic cities in the Mediterranean. It is an event that captures the most authentic identity of Caltagirone and the entire Calatino region.
For 2026, the festival confirms its dual heart: the religious solemnity of the Assumption and the spectacle of the illuminated staircase. On August 15th, at dawn, following the Dawn Mass, the statue of Maria SS. del Ponte will process through the parish's main streets, while the traditional votive offering of the tablecloths and the Quartara will be renewed in the evening. On the evenings of the 14th and 15th, at 9:30 PM, the 142 majolica-tiled steps of the Santa Maria del Monte Staircase will glow with thousands of colored lanterns, set within the UNESCO-listed historic center of Caltagirone.
Liturgical times follow the established structure of the festivities; any details regarding the staircase design will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
August 14th and 15th. Illumination of the Santa Maria del Monte Staircase at 9:30 PM on both evenings; Dawn Mass on August 15th at 5:30 AM, followed by the statue's procession.
Caltagirone is located in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Catania. By car, it can be reached via the SS417 Catania-Gela; the train station connects the city to the regional network. Nearest airport: Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The Illuminated Staircase attracts large crowds: it is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot along the steps or in the historic squares. The festival is free to attend. Temperatures in August are high: bring water and light clothing.
