The nativity comes to life among the alleys and stairways of the historic center of Chiaramonte Gulfi

The Living Nativity of Chiaramonte Gulfi, a picturesque village in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Ragusa, has returned to stir the community after more than a decade. The re-enactment of the nativity winds through the alleys and steep stairways of the historic center, where ancient, often disused ground-floor premises are restored and reopened to host the nativity scenes. It is one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian folk tradition, capable of transforming the entire village into a large open-air stage.
The staging reconstructs the rural Chiaramonte of the 1940s and 50s, restoring the atmosphere of peasant life from the past. Along the route, visitors encounter local women preparing homemade bread, the blacksmith and farrier at work, the barber's shop, the washerwoman, the tavern, and numerous other ancient crafts. Each scene is meticulously detailed and brought to life by local actors who revive the gestures, sounds, and scents of the Iblei tradition.
The event begins with a procession moving from Piazza Duomo: Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary on a donkey, preceded by three Roman legionaries and followed by angels and shepherds, reach the site where the nativity is set. It is the most emotional moment of the evening, a collective ritual that involves the entire community of Chiaramonte Gulfi and the many visitors who reach the village every year during the Christmas holidays.
The initiative is promoted by the Youth Council together with the Municipality of Chiaramonte Gulfi, with the involvement of numerous local associations and volunteers. More than just a show, the Living Nativity is a community project that enhances the historic center, recovers forgotten spaces, and passes on the memory and identity of the most authentic Sicily to new generations.
The event is held during the Christmas season, with performances between Boxing Day and Epiphany. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Chiaramonte Gulfi for the updated calendar.
