Immersive theatre in the places of Giovanni Verga, in Vizzini
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Verghiane Festival is a grand theatrical and musical event that enlivens Vizzini, in the Province of Catania, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily, every summer. This is where Giovanni Verga, the father of Italian Verismo, was born in 1840, and it is among these very stones that the author set some of his greatest masterpieces. The festival was established in 1972 by the local playwright and director Alfredo Mazzone, who invented a unique concept: revival theatre. Instead of traditional stages, Verga's works are performed outdoors in the actual locations where the author imagined the events taking place.
Performances are held in the squares and alleys of the historic centre, from Piazza Umberto I to Piazza Santa Teresa, reaching the ancient Norman Castle and, most notably, the Cunziria—the old tannery district outside the town where Verga set the duel in Cavalleria rusticana and the events of La Lupa. This village of stone houses, currently the focus of a major restoration project funded by the Ministry of Culture, is the very symbol of the bond between the town and its writer.
Over the years, the festival has staged a repertoire drawing from Verga's entire body of work:
Renowned national actors have graced these stages over the years. The festival brings together local troupes, Sicilian theatre associations, and musical performances, maintaining free admission to introduce the public to the great Verismo repertoire.
Attending the Verghiane means discovering Vizzini itself: walking through the places described in the short stories, recognising the vistas of the Cunziria, and breathing in the atmosphere of the rural Sicily that Verga gifted to world literature. It is an event that intertwines memory, local identity, and live performance, renewing the bond between the village and its most illustrious son every summer for over fifty years.
At the moment, the Municipality of Vizzini has not yet published the dates and programme for the 2026 edition of the Verghiane Festival. The festival is held annually and traditionally takes place between August and September in the historic centre and the Cunziria district.
The programme is usually released in the weeks preceding the event through the official channels of the Municipality. This page will be updated as soon as dates, performance titles, and booking procedures are available.
