About Mangia e passìa

Mangia e passìa is the charming street food festival of Joppolo Giancaxio, a 17th-century village in the Agrigento area. Every June 2nd, Corso Umberto transforms into a culinary trail featuring stalls serving Sicilian street food—panelle, arancine, panino con la meusa, sfincione, and cannoli—alongside a market of local handicrafts. Live music, street theatre, and circus arts accompany the evening stroll that effectively marks the start of summer in Joppolo. A free, convivial event promoted by the Municipality in partnership with Legambiente.

Mangia e passìa: the village you explore one bite at a time

Mangia e passìa is the street food festival that brings Joppolo Giancaxio to life every year, a small 17th-century village in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. The name itself, in the local Sicilian dialect, is an invitation: "eat and walk," meaning to taste as you stroll. For one evening, Corso Umberto turns into a long path of taste and tradition, where visitors move slowly from one stall to the next, one bite after another.

Sicilian street food takes center stage

The heart of the event is the island's street gastronomy, showcased through its most beloved specialties. Among the stalls set up along the main street, you will find:

  • Panelle and arancine, icons of Sicilian rotisserie
  • Panino con la meusa (spleen sandwich), a classic of popular street food
  • Sfincione and cudduruni, traditional focaccias
  • Stigghiola and grilled sausage, featuring zero-mile products
  • Cannoli and artisanal gelato for a sweet finish

Alongside the food stalls, a market of artisanal and local products highlights the small-scale production of the Agrigento territory, giving space to local artisans and hobbyists.

Music, theatre, and street art

Mangia e passìa is about more than just food: the evening is punctuated by performances and live music. Recent years have featured the acoustic concert of Flavio Coloma (known as «Bebo»), street theatre with Gianmarco Amato, and musical incursions by the Modern Music Orchestra (MMO). To complete the atmosphere, artistic performances and circus acts animate the village's alleys and squares.

An event that kicks off the summer

Promoted by the Municipality of Joppolo Giancaxio together with the Rabat Circle of Legambiente in Agrigento and various local entities, the event is part of the initiatives linked to the «Voler Bene all'Italia» campaign dedicated to small villages. The fixed date of June 2nd ties the festival to the Republic Day, making it the symbolic moment that marks the beginning of the local summer. Admission is free and the atmosphere is family-friendly: a great opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Valley of the Temples far from the main tourist flows.
