About Madonna di Briano

Every year, on the Sunday following Easter, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Briano draws thousands of faithful and curious visitors to the countryside between Villa di Briano and Casal di Principe, in the province of Caserta. Holy masses, a procession, decorated floats, and above all the 'paranze' groups performing traditional drum-led songs and dances make this festival one of the most authentic expressions of popular devotion in Campania, where prayer intertwines with the tammurriata and the flavors of rural tradition.

A Marian festival in the heart of the Agro Aversano

The Madonna di Briano Festival is one of the most heartfelt events in the devotional calendar of the province of Caserta. It takes place at the sanctuary located in the open countryside, right on the border between the municipality of Villa di Briano and Casal di Principe, in Campania. Here, on the Sunday following Easter, a ritual that unites the religious and popular dimensions has been repeated for generations: a collective pilgrimage involving not only the local inhabitants but also devotees arriving from across the entire Agro Aversano and the Giugliano and Domitian areas.

A sanctuary with ancient roots

The sanctuary stands on a site of probable pagan origin. The first historical record dates back to 430 AD, when Benedictine monks built a small shrine dedicated to Saint Mary; the actual church was likely built after the year 1000 and is already documented in 1196, near a locality called fossa dell'Abatessa. In 1335, the Diocese of Aversa took over the administration of the church's assets, while in 1549 a monastery was built next to the building, which was also used as a refuge during the plague. In 1580, the church underwent restoration work commissioned by the Prince of Stigliano. After the 1980 earthquake, the building was fully consolidated and restored; in 1986, the sanctuary received civil recognition as a parish.

The 1924 miracle and devotion

Devotion to the Madonna di Briano, already rooted for centuries and evidenced by numerous ex-votos, experienced extraordinary growth in the last century following an episode considered miraculous: in 1924, a paralyzed man, Francesco Zippo, claimed to have been healed after encountering the Madonna, who appeared in the guise of a peasant woman near the sanctuary. Since then, the small country church has become a destination for a continuous stream of pilgrims who climb up here to ask for a grace or to fulfill a vow.

The paranze, the floats, and the tammurriata

The folkloric heart of the day is the tammurriata. During the octave of Easter, numerous paranze (traditional folk groups) from the Giugliano and Domitian areas reach the sanctuary aboard decorated floats—once pulled by horses and today often by tractors—to perform songs and dances to the beat of the drum, following the classic style of the area. The square in front of the church fills for an entire afternoon with the sound of tammorre (large tambourines), castagnette (castanets), and the sisco (flute), while dozens of dancers take turns without pause. This is not a show staged for tourists: it is a ritual repeated through time, heir to the rural tradition used to give thanks to the Madonna for an abundant harvest.

The "prianella" and the flavors of the festival

Alongside the religious and musical dimension, the prianella survives—the traditional Easter picnic in the fields around the sanctuary: families and groups gather outdoors with tortano (a savory Easter bread) and other traditional Campanian preparations. Stalls selling typical sweets, nougat, artisanal products, and local gastronomic specialties are set up around the church, creating the atmosphere of a popular fair that lasts all day.

When it takes place

According to the accounts of the elderly, the festival once fell on the Wednesday in Albis; today, the main event has moved to the Sunday following Easter (Dominica in Albis), with celebrations also involving Easter Monday. The date therefore changes every year following the liturgical calendar: in 2026, the festival fell on Sunday, April 12.

Why it is worth a visit

  • One of the most vibrant and least touristy tammurriata celebrations in Campania, with groups arriving from dozens of municipalities.
  • A country sanctuary with a millennial history, far from mass tourism circuits.
  • Free admission and an atmosphere of authentic popular celebration, also suitable for families.
  • An opportunity to discover the Agro Aversano and its deepest identity, made of faith, music, and rural cuisine.

First-time visitors are struck by the contrast between the architectural sobriety of the small church—a single nave, a small bell gable, terracotta floors—and the explosion of colors, sounds, and voices that surrounds it on this day. This is the distinctive trait of the Madonna di Briano Festival: a devotion that has never separated itself from the celebration.

Sunday, April 12, 2026

The festival took place on the Sunday in Albis, according to the tradition that sets the main event on the Sunday following Easter. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Briano, between Villa di Briano and Casal di Principe, welcomed devotees and visitors from across the Agro Aversano and the Giugliano and Domitian areas for the entire day.

The morning was marked by Eucharistic celebrations and moments of prayer before the venerated image, while the procession carried the statue of the Madonna along the streets of the village, accompanied by the band. In the afternoon, the square filled with the decorated floats of the 'paranze' and the uninterrupted sound of the tammorre, with groups taking turns in songs and dances until evening. Around the church, stalls selling sweets and typical products, along with festive lighting, completed the atmosphere.
