About Feast of the Holy Doctors

Every September, the Secondigliano district in Naples gathers to honor its patron saints, the Holy Doctors Cosmas and Damian. Starting from the parish church on Via Vincenzo Di Maro, the event features processions, novenas, and relic blessings, while the streets come alive with illuminations, market stalls, and music. Alongside the liturgical solemnity on September 26th, the civil program promoted by the Municipality of Naples brings free concerts and brass band marches to Piazza Zanardelli, creating a festival that blends faith, popular tradition, and neighborhood identity.

A patronal feast in the heart of Secondigliano

Every September, Secondigliano, a populous district in the northern suburbs of Naples, Campania, pauses to honor its patron saints: the Holy Doctors Cosmas and Damian. This patronal feast is one of the most cherished events of the year for the entire 7th Municipality of Naples, attracting not only residents but also families from neighboring districts and the metropolitan area.

For two weeks, religious and civil calendars intertwine: novenas, rosaries, and Eucharistic celebrations at the parish church on Via Vincenzo Di Maro alternate with illuminations, market stalls, symphonic band marches, and open-air concerts. It is a street festival in the most authentic sense, where Neapolitan popular devotion is expressed with equal naturalness through prayer and music.

Cosmas and Damian, the Holy Doctors

Cosmas and Damian were two brothers—traditionally twins—born in Arabia around the mid-3rd century. Physicians by profession, they treated the sick for free—earning them the title of anargyroi, or "without money"—and died as martyrs during the persecutions of Diocletian. Their cult spread quickly across the Mediterranean and found particularly fertile ground in Naples. To this day, the two saints are invoked as protectors of health, and the blessing with their relics remains one of the most attended moments of the feast. The liturgical solemnity falls on September 26th, the date around which the entire program revolves.

The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian

The heart of the festival is the parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian on Via Vincenzo Di Maro. The building was reconstructed in 1695 following the earthquakes that struck the Naples area at the end of the 17th century, and was completed in the early 18th century thanks to a public subscription.

The interior, featuring a single nave with side chapels, houses an altarpiece by Giacomo Farelli dedicated to the titular saints, frescoes by Giuseppe Simonelli, a PietĂ  by Nicola Vaccaro in the sacristy, and a wooden crucifix by Nicola Fumo from 1692. The four-level bell tower rests on a rusticated base from 1721. Beneath the church lies the crypt known as Terrasanta, a historic site of the Neapolitan cult of the so-called anime pezzentelle (poor souls). The parish, entrusted to the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts, celebrated the 150th anniversary of its dedication in 2025 with a jubilee year.

The religious program

The liturgical calendar opens with a mass and the traditional procession of the painting of the Patron Saints, which travels through the main streets of the district to Piazza Zanardelli. This is followed by the days of the novena, featuring rosaries, Eucharistic celebrations led by visiting priests, and moments dedicated to catechism students. On September 26th, the solemnity of the Holy Doctors, masses are held throughout the day, culminating in the solemn blessing with the relics. The festival concludes with an evening procession featuring the silver busts of the two saints, accompanied by the 18th-century image of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The civil festival: bands, concerts, and street celebrations

Alongside the church events, the civil festival brings music to the square. The "Patronal Feasts. Blessed are those who live them!" series, promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples, includes Secondigliano in the city's circuit of patronal celebrations: free concerts in Piazza Zanardelli, symphonic band marches along the streets of the district's historic center, and shows designed for families. There is no shortage of stalls selling sweets, balloons, and saint-themed souvenirs, nor guided walks through the district's historic courtyards.

What to expect

  • Processions: the painting of the Patron Saints at the opening, and the silver busts and Our Lady of the Rosary at the closing.
  • Blessing with the relics on the day of the solemnity, September 26th.
  • Brass band through the streets of Secondigliano's historic center.
  • Free concerts in Piazza Zanardelli, featuring artists from the Neapolitan scene.
  • Illuminations, market stalls, and stands along the district's streets.
  • Guided tours of historic villas, palaces, and courtyards.

Secondigliano beyond the festival

Visitors arriving from outside will discover a district that retains the layout of an ancient rural village: the long Corso Secondigliano, historic churches, and courtyards hidden behind large doorways. The patronal feast is the best opportunity to visit and understand what a neighborhood patronal feast means in Naples: not an event built for tourism, but a collective ritual passed down from generation to generation.

Feast of the Holy Doctors — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Secondigliano is part of the fourth edition of the "Patronal Feasts. Blessed are those who live them!" series by the Municipality of Naples. On Sunday, September 20, Piazza Zanardelli hosts a free concert by Emiliana Cantone; on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, starting at 10:00 AM, the Casandrino brass band will enliven the streets of the district's historic center. September 26 remains the day of the liturgical solemnity of the Holy Doctors.

The 2026 patronal feast in Secondigliano

In 2026, the feast of the Holy Doctors Cosmas and Damian returns to Secondigliano with a civil program confirmed by the Municipality of Naples as part of the "Patronal Feasts. Blessed are those who live them!" series, now in its fourth edition and distributed from June 1 to October 17 across 26 city patronal feasts, all with free admission.

The first event is on the evening of Sunday, September 20, when Piazza Zanardelli—the large space around which the district's festival has always revolved—welcomes the concert by Emiliana Cantone at 9:00 PM. The following weekend, Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, starting at 10:00 AM, the Casandrino brass band will parade through the streets of the historic center with its symphonic marches, following a tradition that has accompanied Neapolitan patronal feasts for generations.

September 26 coincides with the liturgical solemnity of the Holy Doctors: celebrations and the solemn blessing with the relics are concentrated in the parish church on Via Vincenzo Di Maro, while the full religious calendar—novena, rosaries, opening procession, and closing evening procession with the silver busts of the saints and Our Lady of the Rosary—is released by the parish in the preceding weeks.
