The patronal feast of the San Lorenzo district, blending faith, music, and local food at the ancient Benedictine Abbey of Aversa
The Saint Lawrence Festival, also known as the Laurentian Days, is the patronal celebration of the San Lorenzo district in Aversa, in the heart of the Caserta province, Campania. The heart of the festivities is the Abbey of San Lorenzo ad Septimum, the Basilica of Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls, founded by the Lombards before the year 1000 along the ancient Via Campana and which became, under the Normans, one of the most important Benedictine abbeys in Southern Italy. The name «ad Septimum» recalls its location at the seventh mile from Capua. It is in this treasure trove of history and art, among the Baroque and Renaissance cloisters and the 12th-century marble portal, that the Aversa community pays homage to its Saint every summer.
Saint Lawrence, a deacon of the Church of Rome martyred in 258, is one of the most venerated figures in Christianity: his liturgical feast falls on August 10th, the famous night of the shooting stars. In Aversa, the devotion is deep and ancient, guarded by the basilica's parish and the district's associations, which renew a calendar each year that combines religious and popular dimensions.
The festivities open with the solemn Triduum of preparation, days of prayer and reflection that guide the community toward the feast. During the festival, the Abbey also becomes a stage for sacred and classical music concerts, enhanced by the basilica's monumental organ, and cultural moments dedicated to the history and Benedictine art of the complex.
Alongside religious celebrations, the festival thrives on social connection: the Popular Festival of Ancient Flavors fills the spaces around the abbey with the aromas of the Terra di Lavoro gastronomic tradition, while the final procession involves the entire neighborhood in a parade of faith and belonging. For Aversa and the Diocese, the Laurentian Days are not just a patronal feast, but a way to rediscover and give back to the city one of its most precious monuments.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Lawrence Festival in Aversa (Caserta province) renews a consolidated appointment of local devotion, centered on the Abbey of San Lorenzo ad Septimum. The martyr's liturgical feast falls as always on August 10th, around which the religious celebrations, concerts in the basilica, and popular festivities of the district are organized.
The detailed program of individual events will be published by the Parish and the Diocese of Aversa in the weeks preceding the event.
