A Marian devotion in the heart of the Cassino region

In Sant'Angelo in Theodice, a village within the municipality of Cassino in the province of Frosinone, the Madonna della Pietà Festival is far more than a religious observance: it is the defining event that brings the entire community together every year. The celebration takes place on the second Sunday of May, coinciding with Mother's Day, and culminates in a day of processions, music, and folk traditions that bridge the gap between faith and civic life.

Origins: The legend of the shepherdess and the miracles of 1717

The devotion stems from an ancient legend involving a mute shepherdess who, according to tradition, was visited by the Virgin Mary, who requested that a chapel be built in her honor. The small sanctuary was established in the early 18th century in a locality once known as Colle San Leonardo, now simply called "la Pietà." Records of the miracles attributed to the Madonna date back to 1717—documents now preserved in the Abbey of Montecassino—giving this festival some of the deepest roots in the region.

How the festival unfolds

Festivities begin weeks in advance, when the sacred image is moved from the Sanctuary of the Pietà to the parish church of San Giovanni Battista. This is followed by the triduum of preparation, with sermons delivered by priests from the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo. On the day of the festival, a solemn morning mass is held, followed by the first procession that returns the statue to the sanctuary, accompanied by brass band music and fireworks.

The procession and the encounter on the Gari bridge

The most evocative moment occurs in the evening, when the Madonna della Pietà leaves the sanctuary once more to return to the village center. On the Gari bridge, the historic encounter between the statues takes place: the Madonna is greeted by Saint John the Baptist, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Michael the Archangel, who accompany her to the parish church. The meeting of the processions is celebrated with a grand fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the river, marking one of the most anticipated moments of the entire day.

Sant'Angelo in Theodice and the memory of war

Sant'Angelo in Theodice was one of the areas hardest hit during the "four battles" of Cassino in World War II. For this reason, the festival holds a deep value of collective memory: the community rebuilt its identity in the post-war period around the Madonna della Pietà, and the procession has become the most direct and cherished way to connect with tradition and those who are no longer with us.

A community gathering

Organized by the Historical Festival Committee of the Madonna della Pietà in collaboration with the parish, the event attracts numerous pilgrims every year from neighboring towns and across lower Lazio. Between the devotion, the illuminations, the band concerts, and the fireworks, it remains the most beloved event for the people of Sant'Angelo and one of the most characteristic religious and popular gatherings in the Cassino area.
