A centuries-old devotion in the heart of Ciociaria

The Patronal Feast of the Madonna di Loreto is the most important religious and popular event in Arpino, a historic village in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. The celebration, which revolves around the December 10th anniversary, combines the deep spirituality of the Arpino community with the civic and gastronomic traditions that have honored the patron saint for centuries. It is a winter festival that fills the streets of the historic center and draws back many Arpino natives who return home for the occasion.

Since 1799: The Madonna who saved Arpino

The devotion of the people of Arpino to the Madonna di Loreto was consolidated during the 17th century, but it is primarily linked to an event on April 17, 1799. According to tradition, French troops marching toward the village suddenly retreated: local legend tells of the appearance of an army of white-clad figures descending from a nearby hill, interpreted as a sign of the Virgin's protection. The people of Arpino also attribute their escape from calamities and plagues, such as the one that struck Rome, Naples, and much of the South in 1656, to the Madonna. A plaque in the center still commemorates these events today.

The program: processions, masses, and concerts

The festivities begin on the third Sunday of November, when the venerated wooden statue of the Madonna is carried in procession from the Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo to the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Piazza Municipio, accompanied by the town band. The statue remains on display for the faithful until mid-January.

The Crespelle Festival and the December fair

Alongside the religious dimension, on December 10th, Arpino comes alive with a vibrant fair along the town streets and the unmissable Crespelle Festival, dedicated to one of the most beloved specialties of Ciociaria cuisine. Crespelle, thin fritters from the local peasant tradition, are prepared and offered among the stalls, turning the patronal feast into an occasion for conviviality and the rediscovery of local flavors.

Arpino, between Cicero and the acropolis of Civitavecchia

Attending the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in Lazio. Arpino, the birthplace of the ancient orator Marcus Tullius Cicero, preserves a remarkable historical and artistic heritage, dominated by the Civitavecchia acropolis with its imposing polygonal walls and pointed arch.
