The patronal feast of Gagliano Castelferrato, featuring laurel, horses, and late-August processions

The San Cataldo Festival is the most significant religious and popular celebration in Gagliano Castelferrato, a small village perched in the hinterland of the Enna province, in the heart of Sicily. San Cataldo, an Irish-born bishop venerated throughout Southern Italy, is the town's patron saint. He is celebrated every year during the last three days of August, from the 29th to the 31st, with festivities often extending into early September.
The festival is preceded by ancient and unique preparations. On the evening of August 22nd, the "vanniatu u ddavuru" takes place—a public announcement signaling that it is time to gather laurel. On August 23rd, devotees set out on a pilgrimage to the woods of Caronia, in the province of Messina, to collect laurel branches. On August 29th, these branches are carried in a procession through the town streets to the saint's church to be blessed. A characteristic element of this ritual are the "verghe": trunks covered in colored paper and images of the saint, traditionally transported on donkeys.
Also on August 29th, the evocative parade of festively adorned horses takes place, offering a chance to admire the elegance of the animals and the skill of the riders in traditional attire. On the evening of August 30th, the procession of the relics of San Cataldo is held, featuring the precious silver reliquary. On August 31st, following the panegyric mass—usually officiated by the Bishop—the solemn procession begins: the statue of the saint, carried on the shoulders of devotees dressed in white, travels through the town, culminating in the spectacular "ascent" toward the Mother Church. Many faithful follow the procession barefoot, holding lit candles as part of a vow renewed year after year.
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival is a major moment of community gathering for the people of Gagliano Castelferrato and for the emigrants who return to the village for the occasion. The evenings bring the historic center's squares to life with shows, live music, concerts by well-known artists, and the inevitable fireworks display that closes the festivities. The event is part of the broader Gagliano Summer program, promoted by the Municipality and the local Pro Loco.
The 2026 edition of the San Cataldo Festival in Gagliano Castelferrato does not yet have an official published program. The patronal feast traditionally takes place during the last three days of August, with laurel rituals in the preceding days. The detailed program will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
Gagliano Castelferrato is located in the Enna hinterland. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the Mulinello/Agira exit) and continuing along the provincial roads toward the village. The nearest train stations are in the Enna and Catania areas, from which you can continue by car or bus.
The main festivities are held every year from August 29th to 31st, with the preparatory laurel rituals beginning on August 22nd.
The patronal festival and the performances in the square are free to attend.
