The religious festival in Assoro honoring the Augustinian hermit, held on September 10th

On September 10th, the Municipality of Assoro, in the province of Enna, pays homage to Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, the Augustinian hermit who lived in the 13th century and is venerated throughout Italy as the protector of the souls in Purgatory, motherhood, and children. The date coincides with the saint's liturgical feast, marking the anniversary of his death (Tolentino, September 10, 1305). In Assoro, the occasion is one of the main events on the municipal calendar and represents one of the most heartfelt religious appointments of the year, alongside the feast of the patron saint, Saint Petronilla, in May and the feast of Mary Most Holy of the Angels in August.
Saint Nicholas (or Saint Nicola) of Tolentino was born in Sant'Angelo in Pontano, in the Marche region, and joined the Hermits of Saint Augustine at a very young age. He spent most of his life in the convent of Tolentino, where he became known for his severe penance combined with extraordinary gentleness. Tradition links him to miracles of healing and the famous blessed bread distributed to the sick: for this reason, his emblems are the basket of bread and the star. His canonization in 1446 spread his cult throughout Italy, Europe, and the Americas.
The heart of the Assoro festival is the procession of the statue, carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band, civil and religious authorities, and the faithful. In Assoro, the processional tradition is particularly intense and deeply rooted in the centuries: the village is also known for the barefoot rites of Holy Week (the famous "Nudi di Assoro") and for penitential processions where members of the confraternities wear long white tunics and walk barefoot as a sign of devotion. The feast of Saint Nicholas takes place mainly around the town's churches, in particular the Basilica of San Leone, a National Monument of Gothic design that houses works of art and sacred furnishings of great value.
Assoro stands at over 800 meters above sea level, perched on the Erei Mountains in the center of Sicily. Its historic center holds treasures such as the Basilica of San Leone, the Catalan-style Palazzo della Signoria, and the ruins of the Norman castle. Experiencing the feast of Saint Nicholas means discovering an authentic village where popular religiosity, folklore, and history still intertwine today, far from mass tourism circuits.
The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Municipality of Assoro; traditionally, the festival is celebrated on September 10th, the day of the saint's liturgical commemoration.
