The broom-fire procession in Pietranico, blending centuries-old faith with ritual flames

In the heart of the Abruzzo hills, at the foot of the Maiella massif, the small town of Pietranico (Pescara province) preserves one of the most intense and spectacular patronal festivals in the region: the Madonna della Croce Festival. Every year, on May 2nd and 3rd, the village relives a ritual of faith and fire that has remained unchanged for centuries, drawing devotees and visitors from across the valley.
The devotion has roots in the 17th century. Around the mid-1600s, according to tradition, the inhabitants of Pietranico were liberated from bandit raids thanks to the intervention of the Virgin, invoked as Madonna della Croce. Since 1675, the community has celebrated this event without interruption, which the Ministry of Culture has cataloged among the "Abruzzo Fire Festivals," a living testament to an intangible heritage that remains deeply felt today.
The most evocative moment occurs on the evening of May 2nd. At dusk, the community gathers in the square of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and Santa Giusta, from which the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession. As the statue emerges, the cortege is accompanied by the sound of the band and the lighting of two small bonfires, prepared at the edges of the square with broom branches fixed vertically on metal bases.
The following day, the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession to the Oratory-Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce, which stands on a hill about two kilometers from the town, overlooking the Maiella. Recognized in 1950 as a building of significant historical and artistic interest, the sanctuary hides behind a sober stone facade an interior considered one of the pinnacles of Italian Baroque: stuccoes, gold, and painting cycles with 55 scenes, including eighteen episodes of the Passion of Christ attributed to a Neapolitan painter of the Caravaggesque school.
The Madonna della Croce Festival in Pietranico combines popular spirituality, history, and landscape in a single setting. Those arriving in this Abruzzo town during these days will find a village gathered around its own identity, amidst the scent of burning broom, devotional songs, and the warmth of a community that has renewed the same vow of gratitude to the Virgin for nearly four centuries.
The Madonna della Croce Festival is traditionally set for May 2nd and 3rd, continuing a devotion unbroken since 1675. The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially released. As every year, the evening novena with the lighting of small fires, the procession on the evening of May 2nd with large broom bonfires and the faithful's torches, and the following morning's procession to the Baroque Sanctuary on the hill are expected. It is recommended to check for updates from the Municipality of Pietranico and the local parish.
Pietranico is located in the province of Pescara, in the Abruzzo hinterland. By car: take the A25 motorway, exit at Torre de' Passeri or Bussi-Popoli, then follow provincial roads towards the Tratturo Magno area. The nearest train station is Torre de' Passeri, on the Rome-Pescara line.
The main procession with the broom bonfires takes place on the evening of May 2nd; the procession to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce is on the morning of May 3rd.
Wear comfortable clothing and suitable shoes for the village's sloping alleys. For the ascent to the Oratory, located about two kilometers from the center, allow enough time and wear walking shoes. Free admission.
