The festival of the Torresi, blending devotion, brass bands, processions, and pyromusical fireworks

The Saint Lucy Festival is the most cherished event of the year in Torre de' Passeri, a town in the province of Pescara nestled at the foot of the Maiella mountains in the Pescara Valley. According to the municipal press office, this celebration has been passed down for at least two centuries, preserving its traditional roots. Saint Lucy, revered as the protector of eyesight, engaged couples, and children, is the town's co-patron saint. Her cult is deeply tied to the winter solstice—the day with the fewest hours of daylight—giving the festival a symbolic meaning of transition toward brighter days.
On December 13th, the locals simply call it "the festival of the Torresi": a full day that weaves together sacred atmosphere and festive fun. It begins at dawn, with a brass band marching through the village streets accompanied by the sound of firecrackers. The day continues with Holy Mass at the Beata Vergine Maria delle Grazie church, a brass band performance in Piazza Plebiscito, and, in the afternoon, the solemn procession of the saint's statue through the historic center.
The folkloric heart of the festival is the Ballo della Pupa (Dance of the Doll), held in Piazza Mazara: a papier-mâché puppet in the shape of a woman, covered in crackling firecrackers, which "dances" and is set ablaze to the rhythm of traditional music, amidst sparks and colors. Following this, pyromusical fireworks light up Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, bringing a spectacular close to a day that attracts hundreds of people and residents from neighboring towns every year. The festival also marks the official start of the Christmas season in the village and encourages those living elsewhere to return home.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Torre de' Passeri in collaboration with the local Festival Committee and the parish, with the help of many volunteers. It is a collective effort that, through devotion and spectacle, keeps one of the most deep-rooted traditions of the Pescara province and the Abruzzo hinterland alive.
At the moment, the Municipality of Torre de' Passeri has not yet published the official program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Lucy Festival. The celebration, tied to the liturgical date of December 13th, follows the same traditional pattern every year: the brass band wake-up call at dawn, Holy Mass, a band performance, the procession with the saint's statue, the Ballo della Pupa in Piazza Mazara, and pyromusical fireworks. Details will be released by the Municipality and the parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival takes place every year on December 13th, the liturgical feast day of Saint Lucy.
