The Madonna della Croce Festival is the most significant devotional event in Noci, a town in the Itria Valley in the province of Bari, Apulia. Maria Santissima della Croce is venerated as the town's co-patron saint, and her festival, celebrated in early May, marks the beginning of the Marian month and involves the entire community, including the many families of emigrants who return home for the occasion.
The cult stems from an event traditionally dated to 1483, with the discovery of a fresco depicting the Virgin in a cave just outside the town, where the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Croce now stands. Since then, the devotion has never ceased, passed down through generations and making the suburban sanctuary a beloved pilgrimage site for the people of Noci.
The festival is structured as a ritual journey lasting several weeks. In early May, the effigy of the Madonna is carried in procession from the Sanctuary to the town center, where it is welcomed into the church and remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful throughout the Marian month. The highlight is May 3rd, the day of solemn religious festivities and Eucharistic celebrations. The cycle concludes on May 31st, when the image returns to the Sanctuary, followed by the traditional country festival in the surrounding fields.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival preserves all the hallmarks of a grand Apulian patronal feast:
In recent years, the parish has reorganized the program to better suit the community's lifestyle: since many residents work or study away on May 3rd, the civil festivities and the most popular events are often concentrated on the following weekend, allowing more of the faithful to participate without compromising the religious significance of the occasion.
Attending the Madonna della Croce Festival is also an opportunity to discover Noci, one of the most characteristic villages in the Murgia dei Trulli, with its historic center made of 'gnostre' (small courtyards), alleys with whitewashed walls, and its renowned gastronomic tradition. The festival is a privileged moment to experience the authentic identity of inland Apulia, suspended between faith, memory, and popular conviviality.
The Madonna della Croce Festival returns to Noci in 2026, continuing a devotion unbroken since 1483. At the time of writing, the official program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: information regarding exact dates, procession times, brass band concerts, and fireworks will be released by the parish and the organizing committee closer to the event. Check back on this page for the updated program.
