Open-air opera in Piazza Cattedrale

The Piazza Armerina Opera Festival is a summer opera series that brings masterpieces of the genre to the stunning Piazza Cattedrale in Piazza Armerina, located in the heart of the Enna province. Launched in 2025, the festival transforms one of the city's most iconic landmarks into a grand open-air theatre, where the imposing baroque facade of the Cathedral serves as a natural backdrop for the performances.
The event stems from a collaboration between the Municipality of Piazza Armerina and the Sicilia Classica Festival, under the artistic direction of Maestro Nuccio Anselmo. The project focuses not only on musical excellence but also on promoting the territory and its tourism potential: opera becomes a tool to showcase the 'City of Mosaics', world-renowned for the nearby UNESCO-listed Villa Romana del Casale.
The festival features some of the most beloved and representative titles in melodrama. In its inaugural edition, the festival staged three absolute masterpieces, including Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, Georges Bizet's Carmen, and Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticanaโthe latter being deeply rooted in the Sicilian soul.
Attending an opera in Piazza Cattedrale is a unique experience: the urban setting, the evening light, and the natural acoustics of the space create an unforgettable atmosphere. The evenings, featuring a full orchestra, professional casts, and curated stage direction, offer the public the grand Italian operatic tradition in an intimate, cozy setting, quite distinct from large-scale theatres.
Located in the center of Sicily, in the province of Enna, Piazza Armerina is an art city rich in baroque churches, noble palaces, and centuries-old traditions such as the famous Palio dei Normanni. The opera festival enriches the summer cultural offering of the Municipality of Piazza Armerina and appeals to both classical music enthusiasts and visitors eager to discover this corner of the Sicilian hinterland through an intense artistic experience.
The Piazza Armerina Opera Festival, inaugurated in 2025, is also expected for summer 2026 in the setting of Piazza Cattedrale, in the historic center of Piazza Armerina (Enna). Dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the performance calendar will be communicated by the organizers, the Municipality of Piazza Armerina together with the Sicilia Classica Festival. To find out about titles, dates, and pre-sale methods, please consult the official channels of the event.
Performances are held in Piazza Cattedrale (Piazza Duomo), in the historic center of Piazza Armerina (EN), Sicily.
