The grand medieval re-enactment of Piazza Armerina in the heart of mid-August
The Palio dei Normanni is one of Sicily's most significant and fascinating historical re-enactments, held annually from August 12th to 14th in the historic center of Piazza Armerina, in the province of Enna. For three days, this baroque town in the heart of the island transforms into a grand medieval stage, brought to life by over a thousand costumed participants, one hundred horses, and two hundred musicians. The event commemorates the feats of Count Roger d'Altavilla, who led the Norman reconquest of Sicily between 1060 and 1061, liberating the city from Arab rule.
The roots of the festival lie in the popular devotion to Mary Most Holy of Victories, the city's patron saint, whose cult is tied to the Norman victory. The re-enactment in its current form began in 1952, when the historic "Cavalcade" was joined by the famous Saracen Joust, the equestrian tournament that remains the most anticipated moment. 2025 marked the 70th edition, won by the Monte Mira district; the 2026 event therefore marks the historic 71st edition of a tradition that continues to renew itself.
The event spans three days, with all activities beginning in the late afternoon:
The heart of the competition lies in the four historic districts that divide the ancient Plutia: Monte (Monte Mira), Canali, Castellina, and Casalotto, each with its own colors and team of knights. The winning district claims the Palio, a replica of the papal banner depicting Mary Most Holy of Victories, which is kept for a year in the church of the triumphant district.
The Palio dei Normanni is recognized by the Italian Federation of Traditional Games and Sports and is listed among Italy's major national historical re-enactments, serving as a symbol of the cultural identity of the Municipality of Piazza Armerina and all of Sicily. Its atmosphereโfilled with colors, drums, banners, and galloping horsesโbrings authentic pages of medieval history to life every mid-August.
The 2026 edition of the Palio dei Normanni takes place from August 12th to 14th in Piazza Armerina, maintaining the traditional schedule in the days leading up to Ferragosto. The event follows its usual three-day format, with all activities beginning in the late afternoon.
August 12th opens with the Delivery of the Arms and the blessing of the knights from the Monte, Canali, Castellina, and Casalotto districts. On August 13th, the historical pageant travels through the center to reach Piazza Duomo for the evocative Delivery of the Keys to Count Roger. On August 14th, the Sant'Ippolito sports field hosts the Saracen Joust, the equestrian tournament that determines the district winning the Palio.
Piazza Armerina is located in the center of Sicily, in the province of Enna. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello or Dittaino exit), continuing on the SS117bis. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (about 1 hour and 30 minutes away) and Comiso.
The 2026 edition takes place from August 12th to 14th. Events begin in the late afternoon (around 6:00 PM) in the historic center, Piazza Duomo, and the Sant'Ippolito sports field for the Saracen Joust on August 14th.
Participation in the processions and ceremonies in the historic center is free. For the Saracen Joust at the Sant'Ippolito field, grandstands with seating are usually provided; it is advisable to check with the Municipality of Piazza Armerina for details and availability.
