The patronal feast of Piazza Armerina, blending Norman faith and civic devotion
The Feast of Maria SS. delle Vittorie is the spiritual heart of Piazza Armerina, the celebrated City of Mosaics nestled in the hinterland of the Enna province, in Sicily. Its roots lie in the Norman epic: according to tradition, around the mid-11th century, the Pope gifted the Great Count Roger of Hauteville a precious Byzantine icon, a banner that would accompany the Norman knights in their battles against the Saracens for the Christian reconquest of the island. The Madonna thus became a symbol of victory and protection, hence the title delle Vittorie (of the Victories).
In 1161, the image was hidden to protect it from enemies, and for nearly two centuries, all traces of it were lost. Tradition tells that in 1348, while the plague was decimating the population, the priest Giovanni Candilia had a vision that revealed the place where the sacred banner had been buried. The discovery of the icon, celebrated every year on May 3rd, was accompanied by the miraculous liberation of the city from the disease. This devotion is also linked to the memory of January 11, 1693, when Piazza Armerina escaped the earthquake that devastated much of Sicily: this salvation, too, was attributed to the Virgin's intercession.
The patronal feast is divided into two distinct moments deeply felt by the local community:
The original icon is kept in the Cathedral of Maria SS. delle Vittorie, which dominates the top of the town. For the locals, this feast is not just a religious appointment, but an act of collective identity that weaves together historical memory, popular tradition, and a sense of belonging. Amidst processions, solemn masses presided over by the Bishop, the sound of marching bands, and the choral participation of the faithful, the celebration renews every year the deep bond between the community and its Patron Saint, in the sign of a devotion that has endured for nearly seven centuries in the heart of Sicily.
The 2026 celebration calendar opened on Sunday, April 26th at 10:00 AM with the departure of the Sacred Image from the Church of the Indirizzo towards the Church of the Guardian Angels. The highlight of the spring phase was Sunday, May 3rd, the anniversary of the discovery of the icon, marked by an intense day of celebrations:
The second phase of the celebrations will be held on August 15th, on the day of the Assumption, with the traditional evening procession of the sacred icon through the streets of the town, ideally linked to the Palio dei Normanni in mid-August. For 2026, the organization has revised some routes following the municipal ordinance of November 1st, 2025, which limits traffic on the SP15 towards the Sanctuary, to ensure the event takes place in complete safety without sacrificing the spiritual and traditional value of the feast.
Piazza Armerina can be reached by car via the SS117bis (Piazza Armerina exit), which connects to the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway. The nearest airport is Catania Fontanarossa, about 90 km away. The festivities are concentrated in the historic center, around the Cathedral.
The celebrations are held on May 3rd (discovery of the icon) and August 15th (Assumption). In 2026, the program underwent some organizational changes following the municipal ordinance of November 1st, 2025, which limits traffic on the SP15 towards the Sanctuary.
Participation in religious celebrations and processions is free and open to all.
