The sacred re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt through the streets of Sommatino
In the town of Sommatino, a small agricultural center in the province of Caltanissetta in the heart of Sicily, the Saint Joseph Festival has represented the most intense moment of the religious and civil calendar for over a century. Although Saint Barbara is the official patron saint of the town, the people of Sommatino hold a very special devotion to Saint Joseph, expressed in their most famous tradition: "Lu Tuppi Tuppi." The name, in the Sicilian dialect, mimics the sound of knocking ("knock knock") and encapsulates the entire meaning of this sacred re-enactment, passed down orally from generation to generation since 1890.
The heart of the festival is the theatrical re-enactment of the Holy Family's Flight into Egypt. Local actors play the roles of Saint Joseph, the Madonna, the Baby Jesus, and the Angel: after mass at the Mother Church, the procession winds through the historic center, and the protagonists knock on the doors of houses and inns in search of hospitality. One after another, the residents refuse them entry, until a benefactor family—those who have prepared the ex-voto—finally opens their doors to the pilgrims. It is a moment of great emotional involvement that unites faith, popular theater, and community identity.
An essential element is the "Tavula Sbammata," a large table richly decorated with blessed breads, traditional sweets like Saint Joseph zeppole, local products, and fruit specifically preserved by the faithful. The table, a vow made by a family that has received a grace, remains on public display and is blessed; at the end of the festivities, the food is distributed to the needy in a gesture of solidarity rooted in the town's rural culture.
The festival takes place in two parts. On March 19th, the liturgical feast day of the Saint, the main celebration takes place with a procession, solemn mass, and the "Tuppi Tuppi" re-enactment. The second Sunday of August, the summer festival is renewed: originally established because farmers had more resources after the harvest, today it primarily attracts emigrants from Sommatino who return to town for the holidays. On this occasion, the Saint Joseph Palio is held, a picturesque equestrian race where a banner depicting the Saint is contested by citizens with monetary offerings, alongside the Immigrant Festival featuring musical performances in the square.
Parades of horses and Sicilian carts, musket fire, torchlight processions, and moments of deep spirituality make the Saint Joseph Festival of Sommatino one of the most authentic expressions of religious folklore in inland Sicily. An event that allows you to discover a village in the Nisseno area and a living tradition, capable of keeping the bond between community, faith, and memory intact.
In 2026, the tradition is renewed with the dual appointment in March and August. On March 19th, the liturgical day of the Saint, the documented program includes a wake-up call with cannon fire in the morning, the procession from the Chapel of Saint Joseph, solemn mass, the "Tuppi Tuppi" re-enactment at noon with musket fire, the arrival at the table with the blessing, and in the evening, mass and the distribution of the "Tavula Sbammata" food.
The summer festival will be held on Sunday, August 9th, 2026, the second Sunday of the month: triduums in honor of the Patriarch in the Mother Church, the Saint Joseph Palio with the equestrian race and the contested banner, the Immigrant Festival, and musical performances in the square. An occasion that brings Sommatino's emigrants and the entire community back to town.
