About Madonna dell'Olmo

Every year during the second week of September, Cava de' Tirreni gathers around its patron saint: the Madonna dell'Olmo. From the sanctuary on Corso Umberto I, elevated to a Pontifical Basilica, devotion spills into the historic center, accompanied by festive lights, market stalls, fairground rides, and concerts in the square. It is a festival with a dual soul, featuring a religious program led by the Filippini Fathers and a civic program promoted by the Municipality, filled with music, theater, exhibitions, and family activities. The highlight remains September 8th, the Solemnity of the Nativity of Mary.

The identity-defining festival of the Metellian city

The Madonna dell'Olmo Patronal Festival is the most cherished event of the year in Cava de' Tirreni, in the province of Salerno, Campania. During the second week of September, the city pauses its daily routine to gather around its patron saint: for a few days, the historic center, the famous arcades of Corso Umberto I, and the squares are filled with lights, music, and popular devotion.

The festival has a dual soul, as is traditional for patronal feasts in Southern Italy. On one hand, there is the religious program, curated by the Filippini Fathers at the Pontifical Basilica Sanctuary of Santa Maria Incoronata dell'Olmo; on the other, the civic program promoted by the municipal administration, featuring concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions, and initiatives aimed at families and children.

A legend dating back to the 11th century

According to popular tradition, around the 11th century, some shepherds noticed an unusual glow in the countryside of Cava for several nights. Upon approaching, they found an image of the Virgin surrounded by luminous flames among the branches of an elm tree. It is said that an abbot tried to move the image to a place deemed more worthy, but it miraculously reappeared on the tree: a sign interpreted as the Madonna's desire to be venerated right there.

The sanctuary took shape at the end of the 15th century, when Saint Francis of Paola laid the first stone of the building. The church houses the image of a dark-faced Madonna holding the Child, recognizable by her blue mantle with a star and a small mole on her right cheek. In 1931, Pope Pius XI elevated the sanctuary to the dignity of a minor basilica.

1672: The Virgin of the Elm proclaimed Patroness

The bond between the community and its sanctuary was sealed by a specific act: on May 21, 1672, the city administrators declared the Blessed Virgin of the Elm the Patroness of Cava de' Tirreni. Since then, September 8th, the day of the Nativity of Mary, has been the date around which the entire city's festive calendar revolves.

The religious program in the basilica

In recent editions, the liturgical program has taken place from September 7th to 13th at the Pontifical Basilica, with Eucharistic celebrations from early morning until evening. Two moments in particular attract thousands of faithful every year:

  • September 8th — Solemnity and patronal feast: traditional blessing of children in the morning and solemn pontifical mass in the evening, with the offering of the votive lamp by the city;
  • September 12th — Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary: blessing of expectant mothers, a rite highly attended by local families;
  • a plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who participate in the celebrations at the basilica.

The civic program: music, theater, and tradition

Alongside the liturgies, the Municipality builds a civic calendar every year that spans about ten days. Recurring ingredients of the festival include:

  • major evening concerts in Piazza Duomo, featuring names from Italian and Neapolitan music;
  • the evocative dawn concert on September 8th, dedicated to the Virgin;
  • theatrical performances, cabaret, and magic evenings;
  • marching band concerts, an essential presence at every Southern patronal feast;
  • workshops, readings, and shows designed for children;
  • art exhibitions, book presentations, and sports events organized with the CSI.

Illuminations, stalls, and fairground rides

The festival's scenery is defined by the illuminations that light up the basilica's facade and the streets of the center, the market stalls lined up along the historic route, and the fairground rides set up in Piazza Amabile and surrounding areas. This is the most popular part of the festivities, transforming Cava de' Tirreni into a large open-air amusement park and attracting visitors from Salerno and the Amalfi Coast.

Cava de' Tirreni, between the Amalfi Coast and the Metellian Valley

The Municipality of Cava de' Tirreni is known for its arcades along Corso Umberto I, a near-unique case in Southern Italy, and for the Benedictine Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity. Nestled between Salerno and the Amalfi Coast, the city boasts a rich festive tradition, of which the Madonna dell'Olmo festival represents the pinnacle, alongside the Disfida dei Trombonieri. Participating in the festivities means coming into contact with one of the most authentic expressions of Campanian popular religiosity.

Madonna dell'Olmo — edition 2026

The Madonna dell'Olmo Patronal Festival will return to Cava de' Tirreni in September 2026, centered around the September 8th solemnity as per tradition. At the moment, the detailed calendar has not yet been made public: the municipal administration has started collecting donations and sponsorships to fund the 2026 patronal festivities, a sign that organization is already underway. The religious and civic programs are usually presented in the weeks leading up to the festival.

2026 Edition: what we know so far

For 2026, the Municipality of Cava de' Tirreni has not yet released the calendar of festivities in honor of the Madonna dell'Olmo. The only public act already known concerns the collection of donations and sponsorships opened by the municipal administration to support the organization of the 2026 patronal festival, with forms and bank details published on the institutional website.

Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect that the festivities will be concentrated in the second week of September, with the liturgical program in the Pontifical Basilica around September 8th and a civic program of about ten days featuring concerts in Piazza Duomo, shows, illuminations, stalls, and fairground rides. The dates and names of the artists will be confirmed by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.

Practical information — Madonna dell'Olmo

How to get there

By train: the Cava de' Tirreni station is on the Salerno-Nocera-Naples line; from the station, the center and the basilica can be reached on foot in a few minutes. By car: take the Cava de' Tirreni exit on the A3/A2 motorway, then follow signs for the center. During the festival days, much of the historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to leave the car in peripheral parking lots and continue on foot.

Costs

Religious celebrations in the basilica and civic program shows in the squares are traditionally free to enter. Only the fairground attractions and purchases at the stalls require payment.

Tips

The evening of September 8th is the most crowded: those who want to attend the pontifical mass should arrive at the basilica well in advance. The outdoor dawn concert requires a light sweater, even in September.
