The traditional festival and ancient rural fair of Giuliano di Lecce, in the Capo di Leuca
The Madonna del Canneto Festival and Fair is celebrated in Giuliano di Lecce, a small village in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo, at the southernmost tip of Puglia, just a few kilometres from the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca. For over a hundred years, in early July, the entire village gathers around the venerated image of the Madonna del Canneto in an event that combines popular faith, rural heritage, and Salento conviviality.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the church of Madonna del Canneto and San Giovanni Crisostomo, an 18th-century building that houses the wooden statue of the Virgin. During the festival days, the community gathers for liturgical celebrations, the procession, and the devotional rites that have always accompanied the event, bearing witness to an ancient bond between the town and its patroness.
Alongside the religious dimension, the event preserves its most original vocation: a grand fair born over a century ago and tied to the rural world. Through the streets of Giuliano, one finds the stalls where livestock, seeds, and agricultural tools were once traded, and where today one can still find typical Salento products, local crafts, household and farm goods, clothing, and curiosities. The fair remains one of the most anticipated summer moments for families in the Capo di Leuca area.
Over time, the festival has enriched its programme with offerings dedicated to the land and gastronomy: tastings of local products, workshops and courses related to Salento cuisine and agricultural traditions, and meetings to explore the crafts of the past. It is an opportunity to rediscover the genuine flavours of southern Puglia and the knowledge of generations who lived off the land.
As per the tradition of Puglian patronal festivals, the village streets are adorned with festive lights and resonate with the notes of the brass band, while in the evening the town comes alive with stalls, traditional sweets, and merry crowds. The intimate atmosphere of Giuliano di Lecce, with its stone houses and castle, provides a charming backdrop for a celebration that unites spirituality and popular joy.
For Castrignano del Capo and the entire Capo di Leuca region, the Madonna del Canneto Festival and Fair represents much more than a simple summer event: it is a piece of collective identity, a ritual that every year brings together residents, returning emigrants, and visitors around the values of faith, the land, and community.
The Madonna del Canneto Festival and Fair returned to Giuliano di Lecce, a village of Castrignano del Capo, on July 1st and 2nd, 2026. Once again this year, the community gathered around the 18th-century church of Madonna del Canneto and San Giovanni Crisostomo for religious services and the procession in honour of the Virgin.
The ancient rural fair was renewed along the village streets, with its stalls of typical Salento products, handicrafts, and household and farm goods, while festive lights and brass band concerts enlivened the evenings. The event confirmed its character as a major popular festival of the Capo di Leuca, blending devotion, rural tradition, and conviviality.
The festival is held in Giuliano di Lecce, a village of Castrignano del Capo (LE), around the church of Madonna del Canneto and San Giovanni Crisostomo and along the streets of the town centre.
By car: take the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, exit for Castrignano del Capo and Giuliano. The town is located at the southern tip of Salento, just minutes from Leuca. By train: the nearest station is in Gagliano del Capo (Ferrovie del Sud Est line), followed by local connections.
The festival and fair are free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early to find parking near the centre and to set aside time to visit the village and the nearby Santa Maria di Leuca.
