The July festival in the heart of lower Salento, featuring processions, brass bands, and fireworks
The Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Presicce, one of the villages that make up the Municipality of Presicce-Acquarica, in the heart of lower Salento in the province of Lecce. The recurrence, linked to the liturgical memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel celebrated by the Church on July 16th, attracts locals, returning emigrants, and visitors every year to the town's historic center, among the narrow streets and courtyards that tell the story of the farming and olive oil heritage of this land in the Capo di Leuca.
The heart of the festival remains deeply religious: the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna del Carmine travels through the main streets of the village, accompanied by confraternities, the clergy, and a crowd of the faithful. Liturgical celebrations in the church mark the two days, while houses and balconies are decorated for the passage of the procession. It is the moment when the community of Presicce gathers around a devotion passed down from generation to generation.
Alongside the sacred aspect, the festival experiences its popular dimension typical of Salento. The illuminations draw arches of light along the streets, the bandstand hosts concerts by renowned Apulian traveling brass bands, while the street market enlivens the roads with stalls selling sweets, toys, and artisanal products. The grand finale is entrusted to the evening fireworks display, which illuminates the sky of lower Salento and closes two days of celebration.
Experiencing the Madonna del Carmine Festival is also an opportunity to discover Presicce-Acquarica, a village known for its olive oil tradition and the historical heritage of its center, where the church and the column of Saint Andrew stand out. The town, nestled inland a few kilometers from the Ionian and Adriatic coasts of Salento, offers visitors an authentic immersion into Apulian culture and hospitality, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The 2026 Madonna del Carmine Festival returns to Presicce, in the Municipality of Presicce-Acquarica (province of Lecce), with the confirmed dates of July 15th and 16th. The two days follow the usual pattern of Salento festivities: liturgical celebrations and the solemn procession with the statue of the Virgin, illuminations along the streets, concerts by traveling brass bands in the bandstand, a street market, and the fireworks that close the festival. An event that unites the village community and welcomes the many summer visitors in the Capo di Leuca.
The dates for the 2026 festivities are confirmed for July 15th and 16th, but the detailed civil and religious program has not yet been released by the festival committee. As every year, the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna del Carmine through the streets of the historic center, concerts by traveling brass bands in the bandstand, a street market, and an evening fireworks display are expected.
The complete program, including the times of the celebrations and the names of the brass bands and guest artists, will be published in the weeks preceding the event.
Presicce-Acquarica is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, along the route to Santa Maria di Leuca. By car, it can be reached from the SS 275 road, taking the exit for Presicce; by train, via the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the LecceโGagliano-Leuca line. The reference airport is Brindisi.
The festivities are concentrated around July 16th, the day of the Madonna del Carmine, with the most intense part spread over two days.
The celebrations take place in the historic center: it is advisable to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the town and move on foot. During the Salento summer, booking accommodation and farmhouses in the area in advance is recommended.
