The Virgin who emerges from the sea, the special patron saint of Gallipoli

The Madonna del Canneto Festival is one of the most defining events of Gallipoli, the "beautiful city" overlooking the Ionian Sea in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region. It is celebrated every year around July 2nd, the day of the liturgical solemnity of the Virgin of the Canneto, proclaimed in 1784 by royal decree as the special and perpetual patron saint of the city. It is a festival that weaves together popular devotion, maritime memory, and civic identity like few others in Puglia.
The name and the cult are rooted in a legend handed down for centuries. It is said that a fisherman found an image of the Madonna among the reeds of a marshy area at the entrance to the city. He took it home, but the next morning he found it back in the same place of discovery: a sign interpreted as the Virgin's desire to remain as the protector of Gallipoli. A chapel was built on that spot between the 13th and 14th centuries, replaced at the end of the 17th century by the current Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Canneto, an elegant Baroque tuff building with a majestic portico divided into three arches.
The most anticipated moment is the evening of July 2nd. In the Seno del Canneto, at the center of a suggestive display of torches, a fiberglass statue of the Madonna, over two meters tall and created by sculptor Tiziano Scarpina, is made to emerge from the waters. Carried by divers, the Virgin crosses the stretch of water to the Rivellino pier, where Gallipoli fishermen welcome her to lead her in procession toward the sanctuary. The scene evokes the miraculous discovery and moves pilgrims and curious onlookers from neighboring towns every year.
Surrounding the religious festival is the Historical Re-enactment of the ancient Canneto Fair enclosure, featuring the exhibition and sale of typical Salento agri-food products, set up in the square in front of the church and along the pier amidst glowing streetlamps. The religious rites and Eucharistic celebrations are accompanied by musical and cultural events that enliven the old town of Gallipoli for several days.
Attending the Madonna del Canneto means entering the maritime soul of Gallipoli and the Salento municipality: an authentic, free, and open-air ritual where faith blends with the life of the fishing port and the landscape of the Ionian Sea.
The official program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna del Canneto Festival has not yet been published. The festival is traditionally celebrated around July 2nd, the day of the liturgical solemnity of Gallipoli's patron saint, with the evocative sea procession, religious rites at the sanctuary, and the Canneto Fair.
