The patronal feast of fishermen in the old town of Gallipoli

At the end of November, the historic center of Gallipoli, in the province of Lecce, gathers around its patron saint, Saint Andrew the Apostle, the protector of fishermen and a model of faith for those who live and work at sea. This recurrence, deeply felt by the community of the old town, is organized by the Venerable Confraternity of Santa Maria degli Angeli and represents one of the defining moments of Gallipoli's religious tradition, marking the beginning of the Advent season.
The solemnity is preceded by a three-day prayer (triduum) that guides the faithful toward the feast day. The first day features a moment of Eucharistic adoration, followed by the responsory and the traditional Prayer to Saint Andrew. The vigil culminates, after the evening Eucharistic celebration, in the procession of the saint's statue through the alleys and squares of the old town, amidst the quiet reflection of the inhabitants and the devotion of the local seafaring community.
The most distinctive feature of the festival is the Pastorale Gallipolina, an ancient folk song that accompanies the procession and resonates through the streets of the historic center. On the day of the feast, from the early hours of the morning, the Pastorale fills the streets, announcing the joy of the celebration. In the afternoon, following the solemn Eucharistic celebration, bagpipes fill the air: musicians walk through the historic center, creating that warm, festive atmosphere that signals the transition into the Advent period.
Alongside the liturgical dimension, the festival maintains a strong popular and convivial soul. In the Confraternity's oratory and throughout the streets of the old town, the tradition of tasting local products is renewed: pittule, wine, and chestnuts, along with sweets from the rich Salento repertoire. It is a moment of sharing that weaves together devotion, music, and gastronomy, bringing to life customs linked to the sea and the Gallipoli winter.
The Feast of Saint Andrew is an authentic opportunity to discover the most intimate soul of Gallipoli, far from the summer beach season. Those who visit the city during these days rediscover the winter face of the 'Pearl of the Ionian': the illuminated alleys of the old town, the deep bond between the community and the sea, the traditional songs, and the flavors of the Salento autumn. An intangible heritage that the Municipality of Gallipoli and the Confraternity have carefully preserved for generations.
The Venerable Confraternity of Santa Maria degli Angeli has not yet published the official program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle in Gallipoli. As per tradition, the celebration of the patron saint of fishermen takes place around the end of November with the triduum of prayer, the procession of the statue through the streets of the old town accompanied by the Pastorale Gallipolina, and the performance of the bagpipes. The final calendar will be communicated by the Confraternity and the Municipality of Gallipoli in the weeks leading up to the event.
The celebrations and the procession take place in the historic center of Gallipoli (LE), in the old town located on the island, with the oratory of the Venerable Confraternity of Santa Maria degli Angeli as the main reference point.
By car: exit from Lecce along the SS101 towards Gallipoli. By train: Gallipoli station on the Ferrovie del Sud Est line. Nearest airport: Brindisi. In the historic center, it is recommended to park in the new town areas and continue on foot.
Participation in the religious celebrations, the procession, and the popular events is free and open to everyone.
