Two days of faith, tradition, and popular celebration in the heart of Nardò
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna del Carmine Festival is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Nardò, a baroque town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. Every year, on July 15th and 16th, the local community gathers around the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel to honor the Virgin of Mount Carmel with a celebration that weaves together religious devotion and popular festivities.
According to tradition, the Madonna del Carmine appeared on July 16, 1251, to Saint Simon Stock, the Prior General of the Carmelite Order, presenting him with the scapular as a sign of protection. In Nardò, as in nearby Gallipoli, the Virgin of Carmel is celebrated solemnly during these days. The town church, built between 1930 and 1935 to host the rites associated with the festival, houses an altar made of Lecce stone featuring an oil painting of the Madonna del Carmelo, attributed to Domenico Antonio Carella.
The most solemn moment is the eve procession on July 15th: the statue of the Madonna travels through the streets of the historic center, from Corso Vittorio Emanuele II to Piazza della Repubblica, reaching Piazza Osanna and the surrounding alleys, accompanied by the Nardò Town Band – Terra d'Arneo, which plays Marian hymns and traditional melodies.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers two days of free entertainment open to everyone: plays in the local Nardò dialect in Piazza Salandra, performances of Salento folk music, a craft market in Piazza della Repubblica, children's entertainment in the Carmelite Cloister, and food stalls set up on the church square, often for charity. It is a perfect opportunity to experience the authentic identity of Nardò, balancing the sacred and the profane, while discovering one of the most fascinating cities in Salento.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna del Carmine Festival in Nardò has not yet been officially announced. According to tradition, the festivities take place every year on July 15th and 16th around the Church of the B.V.M. del Carmine, featuring the eve procession accompanied by the Nardò Town Band, performances in Piazza Salandra, and a craft market. The detailed program will be published by the parish and the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Nardò is located in the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car: take the SS 101 Lecce–Gallipoli road and exit at Nardò. By train: the Nardò station is connected by the Ferrovie del Sud Est lines. The nearest airport is Brindisi–Papola Casale, about an hour away.
The festivities are concentrated around the Church of the B.V.M. del Carmine, in Piazza Salandra, and in Piazza della Repubblica, within the city's baroque historic center.
The festival takes place in the height of summer: we recommend light clothing and taking the opportunity to visit the baroque architecture of Piazza Salandra and the nearby seaside towns of Santa Maria al Bagno and Sant'Isidoro.
