Three days of wild herbs, authentic flavors, and traditions in the heart of the Madonie mountains
The Madonie Traditional and Ancient Vegetables Festival is one of the most cherished spring events in Isnello, a small village nestled in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Created to showcase the wild herbs and ancient vegetables that have been a staple of local peasant cuisine for centuries, the festival is now a key event that weaves together gastronomy, hiking, scientific outreach, and folk traditions.
The heart of the event is the traditional and ancient vegetables foraged from the countryside around Isnello: cardoons, wild greens, and wild herbs that return to the table in rustic dishes like eggplant parmigiana, caponata, arancine, vegetable pizzas, and pasta with sardines, all paired with local wines and regional specialties. Food stalls set up along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and in the squares of the historic center offer the chance to taste the very best from local producers.
The festival is about more than just taste: every edition offers guided excursions into the Isnello countryside to discover and identify wild herbs, led by botanists and local experts, alongside panel discussions dedicated to the health benefits of wild greens. There are also live cooking demonstrations with local chefs and exhibitions on local culinary traditions.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Isnello with the support of the Municipality and numerous local partners, the festival is also a perfect opportunity to explore one of the most characteristic villages of the Madonie, with its churches, narrow alleys, and the surrounding mountain landscape. Admission to the event is free.
The 19th edition of the Madonie Traditional and Ancient Vegetables Festival was held in Isnello from April 10 to 12, 2026, organized by the Pro Loco of Isnello with the Municipality and numerous partners.
The event opened on Friday, April 10 with the inauguration of the educational garden at the "Luigi Pirandello" Institute, an exhibition on culinary traditions, an educational tasting curated by the IPSSEOA of Cefalù, and an evening in Piazza Mazzini.
Saturday, April 11 was dedicated to a guided excursion into the countryside with Professor Rosario Schicchi, director of the Botanical Garden of Palermo, a panel discussion on wild vegetables and health, street food, and musical performances by the group Kimulia.
Sunday, April 12, the highlight of the festival, featured tastings, guided tours of the historic center and churches, and performances by the folk groups "Amastra", "I Terrazzani", "I re di Esis", and "I tamburinai di Trabia".
Isnello is located in the heart of the Madonie Park, in the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tremonzelli or Buonfornello exit), continuing towards the Madonie interior. The nearest train station is Cefalù, from which you can continue by car or local connections.
Admission to the festival is free. Activities take place over several days across the historic center, Piazza Mazzini, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and the Social Center Auditorium. For the detailed program and schedules, it is recommended to check the Pro Loco of Isnello channels.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing for countryside excursions and booking your accommodation in advance, given the limited availability in small Madonie villages during the event.
