The Saint Anthony Abbot Week featuring traditional songs, santantuonje, and animal blessings in Tocco da Casauria

In the heart of the Val Pescara, nestled on a hill between the Pescara River and the backdrop of the Maiella mountains, the town of Tocco da Casauria (Pescara, Abruzzo) preserves one of the most heartfelt winter celebrations in the Abruzzese folk calendar. The Saint Anthony Abbot Week, affectionately known in the local dialect as Lu festival de Sand'Andonie, brings the historic center to life around the feast day of the hermit saint, the patron protector of domestic animals and the farming world.
The core of the event is the performance of the santantuonje, ancient begging songs rooted in Sant'Antonie a lu deserte, a famous anonymous Abruzzese folk ballad. The song playfully recounts the temptations of Saint Anthony in the desert, portraying the saint as a good-natured hermit who always manages to outsmart the devil's tricks. Groups of singers roam the village streets, performing these melodies accompanied by accordions, tambourines, and traditional instruments, creating a vibrant tapestry of music, singing, and folk dancing that lasts from afternoon until evening.
Devotion to the saint finds its most authentic expression in the blessing of the animals, held in Piazza San Domenico. Farmers and families bring their pets and livestock to receive the blessing, renewing a ritual deeply embedded in the region's agro-pastoral heritage. During the Holy Mass, blessed bread is also distributed, a symbol of community and good fortune for the year ahead. While the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot falls on January 16th and 17th, the celebrations in Tocco da Casauria span an entire week.
Widely celebrated in many Abruzzese towns, the tradition of the santantuonje survives with particular vitality in Tocco da Casauria, where it traditionally kicks off in the charming Piazzetta del Gasperis. The festival blends popular faith, rural memory, and dialectal identity, offering residents and visitors a chance to rediscover an intangible heritage that belongs to the deepest soul of inland Abruzzo.
The detailed program and dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the organizers. As per tradition, the event will be held in January: folk songs, music, and Abruzzese dances will accompany the celebrations in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot, including the blessing of the animals and rituals dedicated to the patron saint of the farming world. Official information will be released by the Municipality of Tocco da Casauria closer to the event.
The event takes place in the historic center of Tocco da Casauria (PE), with processions starting from Piazzetta del Gasperis. The animal blessing is held in Piazza San Domenico.
Tocco da Casauria is located in the Val Pescara, well-connected by the A25 motorway (Torre de' Passeri / Casauria exit). The Tocco-Castiglione train station is on the Rome-Pescara line.
The celebrations take place in the village's public spaces and are free to attend.
