Two days in Trabia celebrating red loquats and the ancient home of spaghetti
The Loquat and Spaghetti Festival is one of the most anticipated late-spring events in the town of Trabia, located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. For two days, the village's historic center turns into a vibrant festival space where stalls, tastings, and performances celebrate two local treasures deeply rooted in the region's history: loquats and pasta.
Sweet and fragrant, these loquats are grown across hundreds of hectares in the coastal and hilly belt around Trabia, where the mild climate and sea exposure ensure exceptional quality. During the festival, visitors can taste and purchase fresh fruit, as well as discover derivative products like loquat jam, a key ingredient in traditional pairings such as pasta and sfince.
Trabia claims a historical primacy regarding pasta: the Arab geographer Al-Idrisi, in his famous Book of Roger from 1154, described the village as a place where large quantities of thread-like pasta, called itrya, were manufactured and exported throughout the Mediterranean. This is why many consider Trabia the cradle of spaghetti, a tradition that the festival commemorates and celebrates every year.
The event offers a rich calendar of activities spread across the town's squares and streets:
Organized by the Municipality of Trabia with the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Palermo and the collaboration of the Pro Loco Trabia San Nicola APS and numerous local associations, the festival is now a must-attend event that draws visitors from across the Palermo province. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic seaside village, savor its specialties, and immerse yourself in Sicilian folk traditions in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
The twenty-seventh edition of the Loquat and Spaghetti Festival was held in Trabia on Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, 2026, promoted by the Municipality of Trabia with the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Palermo and the collaboration of the Pro Loco Trabia San Nicola APS.
The program featured ethno-anthropological and photography exhibitions, free tastings, show cooking, street music, folk groups, flag-wavers, a vintage car rally, and evening shows in Piazza Lanza. A special space was dedicated to Michelin-starred chef Nino Ferreri. The festival highlighted the loquats grown in the area and the pasta, for which Trabia claims a historical origin documented since the Middle Ages.
Trabia is located along the Tyrrhenian coast, about 35 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Trabia-Sant'Agata exit). The Trabia railway station is served by the Palermo-Messina regional line, and the historic center is within walking distance.
The festival traditionally takes place on the last weekend of May, spanning two days (Saturday and Sunday).
Entry to the event is free; many tastings are complimentary, while local products and dishes can be purchased at the stalls.
