The Passion of Christ re-enacted through the streets of the historic Gargano center
In the Gargano village of Carpino, in the province of Foggia (Apulia), the Living Via Crucis is the most anticipated and well-attended event of Holy Week. This is far more than a simple religious procession: the entire historic center turns into a travelling stage, where local performers retrace, scene by scene, the final days of Jesus Christ as told in the Gospels.
The performance bridges the spiritual and the cultural: as the organizers like to say, it is "prayer turned into gesture, the word made flesh." For one evening, Carpino becomes the Jerusalem of two thousand years ago, involving actors, extras, and pilgrims of all ages in a meditative journey through illuminated streets and squares.
The route winds through the key moments of the Passion, interpreted with dynamic imagery in accordance with Church tradition:
The Living Via Crucis is organized by the Pro Loco of Carpino in close collaboration with the San Cirillo – San Nicola Parish and the local clergy, under the patronage of the Municipal Administration. The involvement is collective: entire families from Carpino participate year after year in preparing costumes, sets, and living tableaux, passing down a spiritual and identity-based heritage that strengthens the village's bonds.
Situated between Lake Varano and the forests of the Gargano, Carpino is a small town also known for its musical heritage (the famous Gargano folk songs and the Carpino Folk Festival). The Living Via Crucis represents the most intimate and devotional soul of the town: an opportunity to discover the historic center, its churches, and its narrow alleys in an intense and evocative atmosphere during the period leading up to Easter.
The 18th edition of the Living Via Crucis of Carpino once again involved the entire community on March 31, 2026, Holy Tuesday. Organized by the Pro Loco of Carpino with the San Cirillo – San Nicola Parish, the re-enactment presented the moments of the Passion along the streets of the historic center, from the washing of the feet to the Resurrection.
The travelling performance retraced, scene by scene, the episodes of the Passion according to the Gospel:
As in previous editions, the procession of performers crossed the streets and squares of Carpino's historic center, turning the village into a true travelling stage.
The Living Via Crucis takes place during Holy Week, traditionally on Holy Tuesday, in the late afternoon and evening. The 2026 edition (the 18th) is scheduled for March 31, 2026.
