About Living Via Crucis Carpino

Every year, in the heart of Holy Week, Carpino transforms into a vast, open-air stage for the Living Via Crucis, a poignant re-enactment of the Passion and death of Jesus Christ. Performers of all ages bring Gospel scenes to life along the streets and squares of the historic center, from the Last Supper to the Crucifixion and the moving 'Pianto della Madonna' by Jacopone da Todi. It is a deeply felt community event, blending faith, tradition, and the folk memory of the Gargano region.

A Passion that comes alive in the alleys of Carpino

In the Gargano village of Carpino, in the province of Foggia (Apulia), the Living Via Crucis is the most anticipated and well-attended event of Holy Week. This is far more than a simple religious procession: the entire historic center turns into a travelling stage, where local performers retrace, scene by scene, the final days of Jesus Christ as told in the Gospels.

The performance bridges the spiritual and the cultural: as the organizers like to say, it is "prayer turned into gesture, the word made flesh." For one evening, Carpino becomes the Jerusalem of two thousand years ago, involving actors, extras, and pilgrims of all ages in a meditative journey through illuminated streets and squares.

The scenes of the re-enactment

The route winds through the key moments of the Passion, interpreted with dynamic imagery in accordance with Church tradition:

  • Washing of the Feet and Last Supper
  • Arrest of Jesus and Peter's denial
  • Trial before Pilate and death sentence
  • The repentance of Judas
  • The ascent to Calvary with the Via Crucis
  • The final Crucifixion
  • The moving Pianto della Madonna by Jacopone da Todi
  • The Resurrection

A rite belonging to the community

The Living Via Crucis is organized by the Pro Loco of Carpino in close collaboration with the San Cirillo – San Nicola Parish and the local clergy, under the patronage of the Municipal Administration. The involvement is collective: entire families from Carpino participate year after year in preparing costumes, sets, and living tableaux, passing down a spiritual and identity-based heritage that strengthens the village's bonds.

Carpino and the Gargano

Situated between Lake Varano and the forests of the Gargano, Carpino is a small town also known for its musical heritage (the famous Gargano folk songs and the Carpino Folk Festival). The Living Via Crucis represents the most intimate and devotional soul of the town: an opportunity to discover the historic center, its churches, and its narrow alleys in an intense and evocative atmosphere during the period leading up to Easter.
