The patronal feast of San Servilio and the homemade lasagna of Montenero d'Orcia
Perched on the hills separating the Val d'Orcia from Mount Amiata, the ancient village of Montenero d'Orcia โ a hamlet of the municipality of Castel del Piano, in the province of Grosseto โ dedicates two weekends each year at the end of May to its most beloved festival. The Lasagna Festival was born and takes place as part of the Patronal Feast of San Servilio, the village's protector, blending popular devotion and conviviality in an event that draws visitors from across the Maremma and the nearby southern Tuscany.
The heart of the event is the homemade lasagna, prepared using traditional methods and served with a ragรน made from ingredients sourced from local farms. It is a dish deeply rooted in the identity of the Montenero community, a symbol of craftsmanship passed down through generations, served during the festival at the food stalls set up in the village. Alongside the lasagna, the menu offers other dishes from the Maremma and Amiata culinary tradition, to be enjoyed in good company under the festival lights.
Among the most characteristic events is the Pintata del Rotolo, a unique joust where the four districts of Montenero d'Orcia compete to win the coveted banner. It is a long-standing tradition โ the event is now approaching its thirtieth edition โ that ignites the village's spirit of belonging and provides one of the most awaited moments of the festival.
The festival program is not just about good food: the evenings feature a rotation of live music, DJ sets, theatrical performances, and traditional card tournaments. There is also room for sports with the Montene-Bike, a cycling tour through the trails of the Montenero countryside, which concludes with lunch at the festival stalls. A blend of taste, tradition, and fun that makes this event a perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Tuscan Maremma.
Visiting the Lasagna Festival is also a way to get to know Montenero d'Orcia and its territory: a stone village nestled among vineyards and forests, just a few kilometers from Castel del Piano, Mount Amiata, and the thermal baths of the Grosseto area. Those who come for the lasagna stay for the landscape, the hospitality, and the genuine atmosphere of a village festival that keeps its roots intact.
The Lasagna Festival in Montenero d'Orcia returns in 2026 with its usual two-weekend format, from May 22 to 24 and from May 29 to 31, within the Patronal Feast of San Servilio. The food stalls will open on Friday and Saturday for dinner and on Sunday for lunch and dinner, featuring the famous homemade lasagna topped with ragรน made from local farm ingredients.
Among the announced events is the Pintata del Rotolo, now in its 29th edition, the joust that sees the four districts of the village compete. Also confirmed are the live music, DJ sets, and entertainment that will enliven the festival evenings.
At the moment, the detailed day-by-day program has not yet been published by the Pro Loco of Montenero d'Orcia: precise times, artists, and side activities will be communicated in the weeks leading up to the event on official channels and on the website montenerodorcia.it.
