The great autumn festival celebrating the Monte Amiata PGI chestnut in the medieval village of Arcidosso
Every year, during the last two weekends of October, the medieval village of Arcidosso, in the province of Grosseto, celebrates its most precious treasure with La Castagna in Festa. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Arcidosso, pays homage to the Monte Amiata PGI chestnut, a fruit that for centuries was the cornerstone of the economy and culture in this corner of Tuscany, so much so that it was known as the "bread of the poor" for mountain communities.
During the festival, the characteristic historic center of Arcidosso, stretching like a long pyramid at the foot of the Rocca Aldobrandesca, returns to life. The ancient cellars carved into the rock open their doors to the public, offering tastings, lunches, and dinners featuring traditional local dishes, many of which are prepared with chestnuts. Along the alleys, you will find food stalls run by the local districts, where you can sample roasted chestnuts, chestnut polenta, castagnaccio, and traditional Amiata desserts, all accompanied by local wine and mulled wine.
The beating heart of the festival is the food stalls and special menus set up in the various districts of the town, including the famous Nido delle Fate stand, which offers traditional Amiata cuisine. Along the streets of the center, such as Corso Toscana, you will find craft and local product markets, while wandering musicians, games, historical re-enactments, and entertainment accompany visitors throughout the day.
La Castagna in Festa is also an opportunity to discover the rich heritage of Arcidosso. The Rocca Aldobrandesca, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Amiata area, dominates the village and houses museum spaces dedicated to the history of the town and the medieval Amiata landscape. During the event, guided tours and openings of the city museums, from the Aldobrandesca Castle to the Museum of Local Arts, are often offered, combining the pleasure of dining with the discovery of local history.
More than just a food festival, La Castagna in Festa is an event that involves the entire community of Arcidosso, from the Pro Loco volunteers to the residents of the districts. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of a Mount Amiata village in autumn, amidst the scent of roasted chestnuts, the colors of the chestnut groves, and the warmth of Maremma hospitality. A journey into the flavors, culture, and conviviality of the Amiata region that attracts visitors from all over Tuscany and beyond every year.
The 40th edition of La Castagna in Festa will be held in Arcidosso, on Mount Amiata, during the last two weekends of October 2026, from October 16 to 25. The event, organized by Pro Loco Arcidosso, confirms its traditional format for this edition as well, with the village cellars open to the public, food stalls featuring Monte Amiata PGI chestnuts, markets, and entertainment in the historic center.
At the moment, the official program, including cellar opening times, district menus, and the calendar of events, has not yet been published: updates will be released by Pro Loco Arcidosso on their official channels in the weeks preceding the festival.
Arcidosso is located on the Grosseto side of Mount Amiata, at an altitude of approximately 679 meters. By car, it can be reached via the SS2 Cassia or the SR Amiatina; the nearest train stations are in Grosseto and Monte Antico, which are connected by bus lines. During the festival, the historic center is mostly pedestrianized: it is recommended to use the parking lots outside the village.
Access to the event and the markets is free; tastings in the cellars and at the district food stalls are paid, with affordable prices calculated per individual dish or sample.
