The world's largest single-class regatta, held in the Upper Garda region of Trentino
For over forty years, the Lake Garda Meeting Optimist has been the most anticipated event in international youth sailing. Organized by Fraglia Vela Riva in Riva del Garda, in the heart of the Trentino Upper Garda, the event holds the Guinness World Record as the largest single-class regatta on the planet. Each edition attracts over a thousand young sailors from more than forty countries, all competing in the same small boat: the Optimist, the dinghy where future sailing champions begin their careers.
The northern part of Lake Garda, set between the sheer cliffs of Monte Brione and the Trentino mountains, offers some of the most reliable wind conditions in Europe. In the morning, the Peler (or Vento) blows from the north, while in the afternoon, the Ora arrives punctually from the south. These two thermal breezes make the stretch of water in front of Riva del Garda an ideal racecourse, where young skippers can test themselves in challenging yet predictable conditions.
The fleet is divided into two categories: Juniors and Cadets, the youngest sailors facing their first major international regattas. Due to the sheer number of participants, the fleet is split into groups and heats using a flight system to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to race. Alongside the main event, side activities like the Sprint Race and the Meeting Country Cup bring the sailing week on Upper Garda to life.
Beyond the competition, the Meeting is a grand social gathering. Coaches, families, and sailing clubs from all over the world meet in Riva del Garda for a week, turning the harbor and the lakeside promenade into a vibrant international village. The opening ceremony in the town center and the awards presentations mark an event that unites sport with the values of friendship and youth development.
The Lake Garda Meeting Optimist is now a core part of the sporting identity of the Municipality of Riva del Garda and the entire Garda Trentino region, a destination renowned for sailing, windsurfing, and outdoor sports. The combination of a mild climate, constant winds, and a spectacular landscape makes this corner of Trentino-Alto Adige one of the sailing capitals of Europe, with the Meeting Optimist serving as its flagship event.
The 44th edition was held in Riva del Garda from March 29 to April 5, 2026, with the main regatta from April 2 to 5. The sailing week kicked off with the Rothoblaas Sprint Race on March 29 and continued with the Meeting Country Cup on April 1, before the race days reserved for the Junior and Cadet categories.
Open to skippers born between 2011 and 2017 and organized by Fraglia Vela Riva, the event brought together over a thousand young sailors from more than forty nations, confirming its status as the largest single-class regatta in the world. Registration fees were set at 150 euros (early entry), 200 euros, and 300 euros depending on the registration period.
Riva del Garda can be reached by car via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Rovereto Sud–Lago di Garda Nord), then following the SS240. By train, the reference station is Rovereto, which is connected to Riva by local bus lines. The nearest airports are Verona-Villafranca and Bergamo-Orio al Serio.
The headquarters is the Fraglia Vela Riva, located at Via Giancarlo Maroni 2, on the Riva del Garda lakeside. The opening ceremony takes place in the town center.
During the regatta week, the area is very busy; we recommend booking accommodation well in advance. The awards ceremonies and the race starts are spectacular even for non-sailors.
