The traditional autumn market of Laudes in the Vinschgau Valley
The Laatscher Morkt — known in Italian as the Laudes market (in German Laatsch) — is the annual fair that enlivens the small village of Laudes, part of the municipality of Mals (Malles Venosta) in the Upper Vinschgau, at the western edge of South Tyrol. It is one of the historic Jahrmärkte of the Upper Vinschgau, those annual markets that have marked the farming calendar in mountain villages for centuries.
For one morning, the town center transforms into a bustling market: about sixty stalls line the streets with local and homemade products. Among the stands, you will find alpine cheese, chestnuts, fragrant freshly baked bread, cabbage and sauerkraut (Kraut), honey, cured meats, and farm specialties, alongside stalls selling clothing, leather goods, and handicrafts. There is also a section dedicated to farm animals, reflecting the ancient purpose of these markets.
The Laatscher Morkt is above all a feast for the senses: the air is filled with the scent of goulash and the traditional sour soup (Saure Supp), served at refreshment points alongside other typical Vinschgau dishes. The day is accompanied by folk music and accordion players, giving the market that convivial and cheerful atmosphere (klein, fein und gesellig) for which it is renowned.
The market is rooted in the long tradition of fairs in Mals, where markets have existed for centuries. After a period of decline, the Laatscher Morkt was revitalized in the early 2000s and has returned to being a fixed and cherished event for the community of Laudes and the entire Vinschgau Valley.
The Laatscher Morkt is traditionally held at the end of October in the heart of Laudes/Laatsch. The village is easily reached from Mals and is nestled in the landscape of the Upper Vinschgau, among apple orchards, meadows, and the mountains on the border between Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. Admission is free.
The Laatscher Morkt 2026 will be held on October 24, 2026, in Laudes (Laatsch), in the municipality of Mals, according to the annual market calendar released by the municipal administration. This year, the traditional autumn market of the Upper Vinschgau will once again offer around sixty stalls with cheese, chestnuts, bread, sauerkraut, and farm products, along with local crafts and refreshment stands serving goulash and sour soup. The detailed program with times and entertainment will be announced later by the organizers.
