About La Montanara

La Montanara is a mountain choral singing festival that brings the Dimaro Theatre in Val di Sole to life every autumn. Over three Friday evenings, the finest choirs from Trentino take to the stage to perform traditional Alpine repertoire, ranging from war songs to folk harmonies. Established in 2004, this intimate and engaging event celebrates the voice and culture of the mountains in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites.

La Montanara: The sound of the mountains in Dimaro

La Montanara – Mountain Choral Singing Evenings is one of the most beloved autumn events in Val di Sole. Every year, in the municipality of Dimaro Folgarida, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), the Dimaro Theatre hosts a series of concerts dedicated to mountain choral singing, a tradition deeply rooted in the Alpine culture of Trentino.

The festival takes its name from La Montanara, the famous folk-inspired song composed in 1927 by mountaineer Toni Ortelli and arranged for four voices by Luigi Pigarelli: a piece that has become a symbol of mountain singing and is performed by choirs across the entire Alpine region.

A tradition born in 2004

The festival has been held continuously since 2004 and features some of the most acclaimed choirs in Trentino. The programme is spread over several Friday evenings, typically between September and October, starting at 8:00 PM. Each event showcases two choral groups in a dialogue of voices that spans from traditional mountain songs to folk harmonies and pieces linked to Alpine memory.

The featured choirs

Over the years, numerous local groups have performed, including the Coro San Romedio Anaunia, the Coro Roen, the Coro Sasso Rosso Val di Sole, and the Coro di Voci Bianche Celestino Eccher della Val di Sole. The presence of a children's choir highlights the festival's commitment to passing on the choral tradition to new generations.
