About Piturro and Biancomangiare Festival

In Sinagra, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains near Messina, the Piturro and Biancomangiare Festival celebrates two iconic recipes of local cuisine: piturro, a hearty peasant dish made with fried eggplant, peppers, potatoes, broccoli, and sausage, and biancomangiare, a delicate medieval-style almond and milk dessert. Organized by the Pro Loco, the event brings Piazza San Teodoro and the historic center to life with tastings, exhibitions, garden tours, and live music, blending rural tradition with conviviality.

A festival dedicated to the village's flavors

The Piturro and Biancomangiare Festival - Treasures of the Village is one of the most cherished gastronomic events in Sinagra, a town in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, in the heart of Sicily. Created to showcase the traditional products of the Sinagra area and the rural, artisanal spirit of the region, the festival transforms Piazza San Teodoro and the historic center into a vibrant celebration, filled with the aromas of traditional peasant cooking.

Piturro and Biancomangiare

The absolute star is piturro, a humble dish with ancient roots, born from the economic hardships of Sicily's past: a rustic meal prepared with eggplant, peppers, potatoes, broccoli, and sausage, all fried in local extra virgin olive oil. Alongside it is biancomangiare, a delicate dessert made from milk and almonds with medieval origins, once reserved for the wealthier classes. These two recipes tell the story of two different worlds, together forming the village's gastronomic identity.

Tastings, exhibitions, and tradition

The event is more than just food. The program includes conferences on "zero-kilometer" produce, competitions dedicated to vegetable gardens and cooking, a photography contest for young people, painting and local craft exhibitions, and original sculptures made from vegetables. There are also guided tours of the historic center and the vegetable gardens, allowing visitors to discover the rural soul of Sinagra and its famous springs, which have earned it the nickname "the town of a hundred fountains."

  • Food stalls featuring piturro, biancomangiare, and typical Nebrodi products
  • Extra virgin olive oil, cheeses, fresh produce, and traditional bread
  • Painting, craft, and organic sculpture exhibitions
  • Live music and Sicilian folklore

A dual soul: autumn and winter

The festival takes place at different times of the year: the autumn edition in October is joined by a winter edition that is part of Sinagra's rich Christmas holiday calendar, alongside the Citrus Festival and the Christmas market. Promoted by the Pro Loco Sinagra Cento Fontane with the patronage of the Sicilian Region and in collaboration with the municipal administration and UNPLI, the event is an authentic opportunity to experience the traditions of the Nebrodi and the genuine flavors of the village.

Piturro and Biancomangiare Festival — edition 2026

A new winter edition of the Piturro and Biancomangiare Festival is announced in Sinagra for December 2026, as part of the village's Christmas holiday calendar. The exact date and detailed program have not yet been made official by the organizers: as per tradition, the event will return to animate Piazza San Teodoro with tastings of traditional dishes, Nebrodi products, and live music.

A new winter edition of the Piturro and Biancomangiare Festival is planned for 2026 in Sinagra, in the province of Messina, tentatively in December, during the village's Christmas festivities. At the moment, the exact dates and program have not yet been officially announced by the Pro Loco. We recommend checking the official channels for updates.
