About San Biagio Festival

Every first Sunday of October, San Piero Patti, a small village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, celebrates its co-patron saint, San Biagio, with one of the most heartfelt festivals in the local calendar. Originally tied to the month of February, the event was moved to autumn to coincide with the hazelnut harvest, the area's signature product. Two days of solemn processions, masses, musical performances, comedy shows, a street market, and tastings of hazelnut-based sweets and specialties bring the historic center to life.

A patronal feast in the heart of the Nebrodi

The San Biagio Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year in San Piero Patti, a town in the province of Messina nestled among the woods and hazelnut groves of the Nebrodi mountains in Sicily. San Biagio, venerated as the town's co-patron, is celebrated with great devotion on the first Sunday of October, when the village fills with worshippers, visitors, and market stalls.

From Candlemas to Autumn

The cult of San Biagio in San Piero Patti is rooted in a long tradition: the community preserves a precious relic of the saint, a molar tooth kept in a silver monstrance. Although the saint is also commemorated on February 3rd with the celebration of Candlemas and the traditional blessing of the throat and bread, the main patronal feast was moved to October to coincide with the hazelnut harvest, a fruit that has represented the town's primary economic and cultural identity for centuries.

The Program of Festivities

The celebrations typically span two days, blending the sacred with the secular:

  • Processions: On the Friday before the festival, a small statue of the saint is carried by the local youth through the town's neighborhoods; on Sunday, the solemn procession of the 19th-century statue and the relic of San Biagio takes place through the streets.
  • Religious Celebrations: Solemn masses at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the act of entrustment of the local farmers to the co-patron saint, the blessing of the throat, and the distribution of blessed bread.
  • Entertainment: Evenings of music, comedy, and performances in the square, featuring nationally renowned guests.
  • San Biagio Market Fair: Stalls and stands lining the streets of the center, with a funfair for families.
  • Gastronomy: Tastings of sweets and savory products made with Nebrodi hazelnuts, as well as traditional autumn dishes like frittole.

The Hazelnut Festival

The San Biagio Festival coincides with the Nebrodi hazelnut season, a local excellence celebrated through various dedicated initiatives. Stalls and tasting points offer sweets, nougats, and specialties that make this Messinese village a delicious stop during the Sicilian autumn.

A village to discover

San Piero Patti, with its historic center clustered around the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, offers visitors the authentic atmosphere of the small Nebrodi villages. The San Biagio Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover centuries-old religious traditions, genuine flavors, and the warm hospitality of a community that lives its patronal feast with great intensity.
