The non-competitive gravel adventure on the white roads of Valdichiana
La Chianina UBA, an acronym for Unconventional Bike Adventure, is a non-competitive cycle-touring event held in Marciano della Chiana, in the heart of the Arezzo Valdichiana, in Tuscany. Organized by the La Chianina A.S.D. association together with the GravelAlรฒ community staff, the gathering proposes a new way to experience cycling: far from races and stopwatches, discovering white roads, trails, and villages suspended in time. The event takes place one week before the historic Chianina Ciclostorica, the vintage bike ride that has been animating the municipality of Marciano della Chiana for over ten years.
The heart of the event consists of the two stages on Saturday and Sunday, each with two tracks to choose from based on your fitness level:
The routes cross some of the most evocative places in the province of Arezzo: from the hills of Cortona to Castiglion Fiorentino, from the city of Arezzo to the villages of Civitella in Val di Chiana, Gargonza, Monte San Savino, Lucignano, and Foiano della Chiana, along stretches of the Via Romea Germanica and the Cinque Vie of Monte Lignano.
Everything revolves around the base camp set up in Marciano della Chiana, active from Friday evening to Monday morning. Participants have access to tent pitches, covered bivouac areas, a camper zone, showers, bike washing, and mechanical assistance. The semi-autonomous format, reserved for adults with a competitive medical certificate, favors a slow and sustainable approach to the territory.
La Chianina UBA is not just about riding: the welcome aperitif on Friday, the refreshment stops along the routes, the Saturday dinner with a party in the square, and the final pasta party are an integral part of the experience. The evenings are an opportunity to savor typical Valdichiana dishes, from the famous Chianina beef to pici all'aglione, in a social atmosphere that combines sport, tourism, and local farming traditions.
Cycling along the white roads of the Valdichiana means crossing one of the most beautiful agricultural areas in Tuscany, among fields, castles, and medieval villages. The event, supported by the Municipality of Marciano della Chiana, enhances the landscape and gastronomic heritage of the valley, offering Italian and foreign cyclists a unique opportunity to experience authentic Tuscany, far from the most beaten paths.
The second edition of La Chianina UBA was held from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Marciano della Chiana, one week before the twelfth Chianina Ciclostorica. About 250 participants animated the base camp, choosing between the two proposed tracks each day.
On Saturday, June 6, the route crossed the north-east Valdichiana, from Pozzo della Chiana to Cortona, Castiglion Fiorentino along the Via Romea Germanica, the Cinque Vie of Monte Lignano, and Arezzo, returning via Frassineto. Sunday, June 7 was dedicated to the south-west part of the valley, between Civitella in Val di Chiana, Gargonza, Monte San Savino, the Castello del Calcione, Lucignano, and Foiano della Chiana.
French-style start at 8:30 AM, refreshment stops along the route, Saturday dinner with a party in the square, and a final pasta party on Sunday afternoon with awards for finishers.
