About L'Intrepida

L'Intrepida is a vintage cycling tour that transforms Anghiari—one of Italy's most beautiful villages in the province of Arezzo—into a journey through time every October. Riding bicycles built before 1987 and dressed in period-correct cycling gear, up to a thousand enthusiasts pedal through the hills of the Tuscan Valtiberina, along the very roads that were the site of the famous Battle of Anghiari on June 29, 1440. Three routes are available, ranging from 42 to 118 kilometers, winding through vineyards, olive groves, and ancient parish churches. But L'Intrepida is much more than just a ride: it is a four-day festival featuring vintage markets, exhibitions, music, and Tuscan cuisine that brings the entire historic center to life.

A ride through history

Founded in 2012, L'Intrepida has become one of Italy's most beloved and well-attended vintage cycling events, with editions frequently exceeding a thousand participants. It takes place in Anghiari, a stunning medieval village perched in the Valtiberina valley, in the province of Arezzo, officially recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The event celebrates a passion for cycling in a unique way: participants ride exclusively on vintage bicycles built before 1987, featuring steel frames, down-tube shifters, and toe clips, while wearing vintage cycling apparel made of wool in the colors of historic teams.

Routes through the Valtiberina hills

The sporting heart of the event is the Sunday ride, departing at 8:45 AM from Piazza Baldaccio in the center of Anghiari. Participants can choose from three routes designed for every fitness level:

  • Corto (Short) — 42 km, ideal for those who want to enjoy the scenery without excessive effort;
  • Lungo (Long) — 85 km, for more experienced cyclists;
  • Intrepido (Intrepid) — 118 km, the most challenging and evocative test.

The tracks cross the white gravel roads and hills that were the scene of the Battle of Anghiari on June 29, 1440—immortalized by Leonardo da Vinci—amidst vineyards, olive groves, old farmhouses, and Romanesque churches. Along the way, there are characteristic vintage refreshment stops where riders can pause to taste typical Tuscan products.

Four days of celebration in the village

L'Intrepida is not just a race, but a true widespread festival that enlivens Anghiari for four days. The streets and squares of the historic center host vintage bicycle and accessory markets, displays of vintage clothing, thematic exhibitions, cultural meetings, theatrical performances, and live music. There is also space for the little ones with L'Intrepidina, the ride dedicated to children, and for food lovers with the gourmet cycling tour on Saturday, featuring tastings and guided tours.

Anghiari and the Valtiberina

Participating in L'Intrepida is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most authentic corners of Tuscany. The village of Anghiari, with its steep alleys, medieval walls, and artisan workshops, is a destination worth visiting beyond the event itself. The festival has become a benchmark for historic cycle tourism and an iconic tourist product for the entire Valtiberina, successfully blending sport, tradition, landscape, and conviviality.

L'Intrepida — edition 2026

The 14th edition of L'Intrepida returns to Anghiari from October 15 to 18, 2026, with the historic ride scheduled for Sunday, October 18. Three routes (42, 85, and 118 km) on vintage bikes through the Valtiberina hills, accompanied by four days of festivities in the village: markets, exhibitions, theater, and Tuscan cuisine. Registration opens March 8, limited to 1000 participants.

The 14th edition of L'Intrepida takes place in Anghiari from Thursday, October 15 to Sunday, October 18, 2026, with the highlight of the historic ride set for Sunday, October 18.
