About Keschtnpfonn

Keschtnpfonn is the chestnut market that brings the center of San Genesio Atesino to life. Located on the Salto Plateau above Bolzano, it is a highlight of the local Chestnut Weeks. Local farmers offer roasted chestnuts, estate-grown wines, homemade juices, and traditional autumn farm-to-table delicacies. It is a day of flavor and tradition set among the centuries-old chestnut groves that make San Genesio one of the most chestnut-rich villages in South Tyrol.

The Keschtnpfonn in San Genesio

The Keschtnpfonn is a gourmet market dedicated to chestnuts, held in the center of San Genesio Atesino (Jenesien). Situated on the Salto Plateau—the sunny balcony overlooking Bolzano in the autonomous province of South Tyrol—the village transforms its Dorfzentrum every autumn as local farmers set up stalls, turning the square into a vibrant hub for the season's signature fruit.

What to Expect

The aroma of roasted chestnuts follows visitors throughout the day. Local producers offer the finest autumn farm-to-table delicacies, estate-grown wines, and homemade juices, alongside chestnut-based desserts and specialties. It is the perfect opportunity to savor seasonal products while connecting directly with those who grow and craft them.

  • Freshly prepared roasted chestnuts
  • Wines and juices from local farms
  • Traditional autumn desserts and rustic dishes
  • Festive atmosphere in the historic village center

The Chestnut Weeks

Keschtnpfonn is a flagship event of the San Genesio Chestnut Weeks, which celebrate a fruit deeply rooted in the local landscape every October. Once known as the "bread of the poor," the chestnut is now rediscovered as a precious, essential ingredient in local cuisine. The program for these weeks includes Törggelen—the ancient South Tyrolean autumn tradition pairing new wine, chestnuts, and rustic dishes—as well as guided hikes through the centuries-old chestnut groves of Cologna and Avigna.

A Village of Chestnuts

San Genesio boasts the highest number of chestnut trees in South Tyrol, with some specimens over a century old. The chestnut trails (Keschtnweg) and the groves dotting the Salto Plateau create a stunning autumn landscape where chestnut cultivation has defined the community for centuries. Keschtnpfonn captures this identity in a single day, blending authentic flavors, tradition, and mountain hospitality.
