The asparagus season in Castelbello-Ciardes, Vinschgau Valley
The Kastelbeller Spargelzeit is the spring highlight that, every year from mid-April to late May, transforms the municipality of Castelbello-Ciardes (Kastelbell-Tschars), in the heart of the Vinschgau Valley in the province of Bolzano, into the South Tyrolean capital of asparagus. For several weeks, the entire village revolves around this prized vegetable: local restaurants in Kastelbell and Tschars offer special menus featuring fresh asparagus, harvested and served on the same day, accompanied by white wines produced on the sunny slopes of the valley.
Modern asparagus cultivation in Castelbello dates back over thirty years, when Hubert and Martin Pohl planted the first contemporary asparagus field at the Köfelgut farm, introducing innovative varieties and techniques. To this day, the Köfelgut remains the heart of production: the quality of the soil and, above all, the freshness of the product—delivered to restaurants on the very day of harvest—make the Kastelbell asparagus a specialty appreciated throughout South Tyrol and the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
During the asparagus weeks, the calendar is packed with weekly events that invite you to discover the valley's agricultural landscape:
The culinary offerings are complemented by events that enliven the village squares: the Blüten-Brunch featuring a concert by the Tschars brass band, the May Day concert by the Kastelbell band at the music pavilion, the garden and gourmet market in the center of Kastelbell, and open days at the Juval fruit cooperative. It is a widespread event that combines cuisine, wine, nature, and South Tyrolean musical tradition, perfect for those seeking an authentic spring experience in South Tyrol.
From April 14 to May 31, 2026, Castelbello-Ciardes (Kastelbell-Tschars) in the Vinschgau Valley celebrated the asparagus season with special menus in local restaurants and a packed program of experiences.
