Open water swimming in Lake Caldonazzo, a stage of the Italian Open Water Tour
Every late summer, Lake Caldonazzo, in the heart of the Valsugana valley, becomes the stage for the Valsugana Crossing, one of the most fascinating stops on the Italian Open Water Tour, the national circuit dedicated to open water swimming. The lake's crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the scenery of the Trentino Dolomites, welcome hundreds of swimmers from all over Italy and various European and international countries, drawn by one of the warmest and clearest swimmable basins in the Alps.
The event offers a range of races suitable for both competitive athletes and enthusiasts looking to test themselves in a unique natural setting. The sports program includes various distances and race formats:
The Caldonazzo Crossing is the fourth stage of the Challenge dei Laghi, the mini-circuit within the Italian Open Water Tour that awards a cumulative ranking across the season's lake events, alongside the stops in Monate, Leggiuno, Maccagno, and Peschiera del Garda. A context that has attracted national-level athletes, former national team swimmers, and past circuit winners over the years.
The event takes place with starts and finishes at the Lido di Caldonazzo, an official partner of the event, and enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Caldonazzo, as well as institutional support from the sports world. The Valsugana Crossing is not just a competition: it is also an opportunity to experience Lake Caldonazzo and the Valsugana valley in a sporting light, amidst equipped beaches, hiking trails, and the mountain backdrop of Trentino-Alto Adige.
The Municipality of Caldonazzo, in the province of Trento, thus confirms its vocation for water sports, offering open water swimming enthusiasts a highly anticipated late-summer appointment.
The Valsugana Crossing is confirmed for August 29 and 30, 2026 at the Lido di Caldonazzo, as the fourth stage of the Challenge dei Laghi of the Italian Open Water Tour. The weekend offers the usual range of races: Hard Swim (5 km), Smile Swim (2.5 km), Fast Swim (1 km time-trial), the new Impavida Swim (500 m breaststroke), and the relay (1 km for three swimmers).
