About Valsugana Crossing

The Valsugana Crossing brings open water swimming to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Caldonazzo, in Trentino. As a stage of the Italian Open Water Tour and the fourth event of the 'Challenge dei Laghi', this competition gathers hundreds of swimmers from across Italy and abroad, with distances ranging from 500 meters to 5 kilometers. A weekend of sport, competition, and nature at the foot of the Dolomites, with departures from the Lido di Caldonazzo.

The Valsugana Crossing

Every late summer, Lake Caldonazzo, in the heart of the Valsugana valley, becomes the stage for the Valsugana Crossing, one of the most fascinating stops on the Italian Open Water Tour, the national circuit dedicated to open water swimming. The lake's crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the scenery of the Trentino Dolomites, welcome hundreds of swimmers from all over Italy and various European and international countries, drawn by one of the warmest and clearest swimmable basins in the Alps.

Races and Distances

The event offers a range of races suitable for both competitive athletes and enthusiasts looking to test themselves in a unique natural setting. The sports program includes various distances and race formats:

  • Hard Swim — the flagship 5 km race, reserved for the most trained swimmers;
  • Smile Swim — the 2.5 km race, designed for those seeking a more accessible challenge;
  • Fast Swim — the 1 km sprint, with staggered time-trial starts;
  • Impavida Swim — a 500-meter breaststroke race, one of the circuit's newest additions;
  • Relay — the team format covering 1 km for three swimmers.

A Stage of the Challenge dei Laghi

The Caldonazzo Crossing is the fourth stage of the Challenge dei Laghi, the mini-circuit within the Italian Open Water Tour that awards a cumulative ranking across the season's lake events, alongside the stops in Monate, Leggiuno, Maccagno, and Peschiera del Garda. A context that has attracted national-level athletes, former national team swimmers, and past circuit winners over the years.

Sport, Nature, and Territory

The event takes place with starts and finishes at the Lido di Caldonazzo, an official partner of the event, and enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Caldonazzo, as well as institutional support from the sports world. The Valsugana Crossing is not just a competition: it is also an opportunity to experience Lake Caldonazzo and the Valsugana valley in a sporting light, amidst equipped beaches, hiking trails, and the mountain backdrop of Trentino-Alto Adige.

The Municipality of Caldonazzo, in the province of Trento, thus confirms its vocation for water sports, offering open water swimming enthusiasts a highly anticipated late-summer appointment.
